It's 21 degrees at the moment, and should get up to 24 or 25 this afternoon. It's like an oven indoors but feels much cooler outside as it's completely clouded over and there is quite a breeze blowing. No sign of any rain yet and we could do with a bit of the wet stuff now.

What sort of buckets did you use for your potatoes AnnG? When we belonged to a garden club we had a competition every year to see who could get the biggest crop from a single potato grown in a bucket. We had black builder's buckets and were all given one potato of the same variety. I think 2 or 3 in one bucket wouldn't have grown very well but maybe your buckets are bigger. At our old house I did grow spuds in those big square bags and they always did well, particularly Maris Peer. The trouble is they take a lot of earth or compost to keep earthing them up.

I'm just going to hang the last lot of washing out and then I am going to ring the eye hospital and find out when they are going to give me a new appointment to replace the one they cancelled 5 or 6 weeks ago. On second thoughts, seeing the time, I expect half the staff will be going to lunch so I had better leave it till this afternoon now.

I've also been wondering if Annx is back online yet. I still don't know of anyone else who has been affected. I wonder why hers was. Both our computers run Microsoft 365 and Windows 11, I switch mine off at night, OH doesn't but neither have had any problems at all, I'm glad to say.

Hope the rain eases off so you can get out then Mandy.
I think the buckets may had not been placed in the right part of the garden and maybe they should only have 2 potatoes in. Maybe next year I will try again and increase the drainage as they did seem a bit wet.

Mel it is 18 degrees here now Still windy but dry some blue sky and sun but a lot of blowsy clouds moving fast in the strong breeze.

I wonder when Ann's internet will be fixed.

Morning all,

It was sunny here first thing but it's now clouded over ,14 degrees and we should have showers ,it should get to 24 degrees so another hot day .

Anng the potatoes in the new planter are the best then perhaps the buckets were to small for the others even though they were for the potatoes.

Mel I have some ironing here so can I add it to your pile :-) I need to get that done and have a good hoover through .

Oh it's gone really dark now, I have washing in the machine to go out and I need to pick up my Buscopan tablets from boots and put our scripts in .

Just have to go to the post van and then the rest of the day I shall probably do HW and ironing as I have a huge pile again and there's only one of me.

Good morning all, dull and drizzly and windy but 17 degrees. Not going anywhere so the rain is welcome for the garden. Although, having done a lot of weeding yesterday I hope this doesn't make more grow :-D

AnninGlos Report 21 Jul 2024 15:41

I planted 9 second earlies Mandy three each (Jazzy and something else) in the special buckets for growing them. They came to practically nothing. And 3 Charlotte in the new big planter that Jake and his Dad made for me. Those I have dug so far are from one plant

Very muggy here Vera you've been busy ,I have been so lazy this morning just sat out and sewed up a knitted doll ,just the back of her dress to do .

Anng your getting a good lot of potatoes ,how many did you plant ,love the taste of home grown they have that earthy taste.
What a shame the slugs had a go at your runner beans ,I think its going to be a good year for beans after all the rain ,next door has some up against the fence and they are beginning to come over the top and are full of flower.

Well that's a devil about the mower Mel hope bil can get the part and get it going better again .

Well I'm off to do a but more of nothing :-D oh I am lazy :-D

Gone up to 20 now and the sun is shining but just a cloudy blue sky.

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 21 Jul 2024 13:43

O I missed Mandy's post this morning. I must have a look at my beans as with not going down to banty now I forget about them. Toms need tying up and my cue. I have one big and 5 small toms on the plant I bought but the other three are only just showing flowers. I have one Sungold (my favorite) and two of the LARGE toms from saved seed from a neighbours BIG tom she gave me. They are huge and would cover a slice of bread if you cut through the middle. I am hoping I get at least one from the two plants.

17 degrees here now and I am hungry so I am going to do something to eat but first put the washing on the line.

I have done both pond filters this morning so feel I have achieved something worthwhile.

Temp not that high now but higher than it was earlier. 19 degrees but not much sun and very close.
Just spent an hour in the garden cutting back white jasmine and some ivy. Pulling up unruly geraniums and weeding along the trellis and gravel path and a bit by the top trellis but there are loads of helebores in there making it very hard to get in amongst them.

Dug another one pound four ounces of potatoes. Not sure if there are any more to come off that one plant but that is 2 pounds six ounces so not bad.
coughing now, dust got in my throat.
Vera you do seem to be getting it a lot hotter than us.

Mandy I will be envious when you get your beans, as I was late planting them and they grew while I was in the Lake District in May the snails and slugs had a feast on them so none grew and I could not be bothered to plant any more.

At our garden group we were all complaining about the damage done to all our plants by slugs and snails. Then I read in the paper a couple of days ago that it was a bumper year for slugs. All down to the weather in the winter and spring.

Hope BiL can fix the mower again Mel, it does seem to be a problem doesn't it?

Morning ladies

Mel, I would love the miserable day you had yesterday. There seems to be no let up here. At the moment it is 21 degrees and is only supposed to reach 22 but it is heavy. I feel as though the sky is pressing on the top of my head. The forecast for the next 10 days is for top temperatures to range from 22 to 26 possibly with some rain on Thursday.

I haven’t got any energy but can’t keep putting off jobs because it’s too hot so I’ve washed towels and I’ve done all the ironing, some of which has been sitting there for quite a while. Now I’m going to prepare Sunday dinner. OH likes his roast but I don’t feel like cooking or eating roast potatoes and Yorkshire puds so I’m cooking a piece of gammon and having it with some veg. I might do a parsley sauce with it.

Morning girls.

Brighter morning here and we have a little sun which is good after yesterdays miserable day. Thought I would have a lie in today as BIL was'nt coming so did'nt have to get up early. Had a trip to the loo when I got up and thought I saw someone in the garden. When I looked out BIL was here so bang went my lazy day. He has come to take a look at the mower as its not right and its cooler today and not raining he said its labouring going up hill whilst cutting. I could hear it was'nt right and the exhaust is blowing too.

Pc says 16 degrees and cloudy. I hope it dos'nt rain so he can get on with it.

Slept like a log and first call to the loo was 6. 39am.

Morning Anng ,morning all,

More cloud today and it seems a bit fresher out with a bit of wind ,I slept fairly well did wake a few times but nodded off again ,I had a sheet over me but pushed it off as I heated up.
Don't know what we're doing today probably find a few jobs ,one is a bit of dead heading and I noticed a thistle coming up between the runner beans so must get that up ,runners are coming along one or two are about three inches so won't be to long before a pick .

AnninGlos Report 21 Jul 2024 08:02

Good morning woke up several times but managed to get back to sleep. Leg seems to be worse at night than in the day, I think it is similar to cramp in that being in one position it stiffens up and that is what causes the pain. 14 degrees here so not so hot and sticky and didn't seem too hot overnight although I only had a sheet on me. Except for the duvet over my lower legs and feet.
Nothing planned for today again but I seemed to find plenty to do yesterday so no doubt it will be the same today. Could do with a bit more weeding although it rained yesterday so the ground may be wet.

SuffolkVera Report 20 Jul 2024 20:38

It’s been 27 and is still 22 degrees here and very heavy and humid. No breeze at all now. No sign of rain and we’ve only been watering pots so OH has the hose out at the moment. I think it might be an uncomfortable, sticky night. Hope you all sleep OK.

Temp is 18 degrees now. It has been 21 all day no sun just full cloud cover then it rained late afternoon, quite a heavy shower so no need to water. It felt quite thundery but has brightened a bit now.

Afternoon all,

Phew its been so hot we both feel drained and we have only been sitting about awful for people who have to work in the heat.
We did a shop this morning and it was lovely in ths air conditioning but as soon as you stepped out of the shop the heat hit you.

Oh poor Ann I wonder how long it will be before they are back on line ,her OH does a lot of his meetings on line so will be in a right muddle .

We had a few spots of rain when we sat out ,we cleared the chair cushions away and came in then the next minute out came the sun ,we should have rain later but I will probably water in case we don't get any as the baskets soon dry out in the heat .
I had to tie the cucumbers up this morning they like ths heat and have shot up ,lots of tiny cues coming and I saw a tiny tomato about the size of a pea on one of the plants .
