Roxanne Report 30 Jul 2009 18:45

The blast in Palmanova, a resort on the south-west of the island next to Magaluf, struck close to a hotel popular with Britons and 500 metres from a crowded beach.
A car outside the Spanish Civil Guards' barracks in the town was booby-trapped and burst into flames, killing two officers. The number of wounded is not yet known.

It is being blamed on the Basque separatist group ETA - the second bombing attributed to the terrorists in just two days after an attack in mainland Spain yesterday.
Horrified Britons told how they were sunbathing when they heard a massive explosion and later saw the bodies of the officers being dragged from the wreckage.
Scores were ordered to stay inside their hotel rooms as police checked the surrounding area for any more bombs.

Authorities immediately launched Operation Cage, a lockdown procedure that prevents any planes or boats leaving the island.
The move leaves British tourists trying to get home at the end of their holidays stranded and caused chaos at airports there and back in the UK.
Four Thomson Airways' flights were in the air on their way to the island when the news came through that Palma Airport was being closed.
Two - one which had started off at Gatwick and another that flew out from Norwich - turned round and headed back to Britain.

The other two flights were being diverted to one of the other Balearic islands, where holidaymakers will have to work out their next move.
