It is a constant worry Sue, a bit nerve wracking at times, but we manage. OH is a very private person, and hates a fuss. I have been in bad books for calling an ambulance at times, but what are you to do when you have a body on the floor that won't respond no matter what.

Diane.......You will only be answerable to the Duchess - you wouldn't want to be answerable to me.....I'm a real ogre lol

Thanks Sue,

I did start a thread on the TTF Board a while ago. I'll nudge it up

I don't have Ancestry myself but I am a member of the Australind Family History Society which has access to the site.

I haven't been able to go to the Society recently, even though it is only five minutes away, because my part time work has clashed with their opening times

The Thread Is called Trying to Find Clifford Mortimer, I'll nudge it up now

Sydneybloke Report 11 Sep 2009 11:06

Blow. I was just typing a long message directly in the Reply section and it went pfft. At least Word usually doesn’t go pfft on me and I can paste it when I’ve finished. Also overcomes the GR jitters.
What I was saying is that there have been maps with the southern hemisphere on top. Confusingly, east is still on the right side so just turning them upside down doesn’t work.
The only down side – sorry Persephone (may I call you Persey?) – is that New Zealand is above Australia. It starts just south of Sydney and goes a long way down. As a point of trivia, I once heard a quiz question asking for the southernmost national capital. The answer was Wellington. Canberra is second.
I wonder who our southernmost member is. Persephone could make a claim but I think it might be one of our Melbourne people.
Some of my confusion has been lifted. There is Linda in Yorkshire or whatever it has been renamed, and Lynda who may (or may not) be near London. Almost as clear as – well, clean water at least.
I have been almost laughing out loud at some of Allan’s jokes but he has competition. By the way, what does PMSL mean? It’s only recently that I found out what LOL meant nowadays. I thought it was Little Old Lady. I do know KISS. But for years I thought Nosmo King was a man with a very odd first name.
I don’t wish to apply for a staff position at Tecwyn Manor and Farm. I have promised myself I will never do a formal job interview again, and believe me I’ve done hundreds.
-Allan, I am overweight, have Type 2, hypertension, gout, and oh yes, was once diagnosed as bipolar, which I dispute. I get exercise by public transport to work (train and bus) usually and walking about when on site visits. The other day I had to climb 6 flights of stairs. With a case of equipment. I have done it before on this site, but you can bet I was puffing furiously at the top.
-Berona, I sympathise with the rattle of the pills. I am taking five at night and two in the morning. Also fish oil capsules and at the moment anti-inflammatory tablets for tendonitis. But I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in.
For Aussies Only is a nice thread. I am also glad that we have so many honorary Aussies. Posh started one that is almost totally free of content. It is a bit like Twitter, few people write more than a couple of lines.
Speaking of honorary Aussies, I never qualified for a British passport as all my grandparents were born here, although a couple of greats were born there, in Wiltshire and Antrim. My ancestry is the usual Heinz. English, Scots, a lot of Irish, and German. The last were in Australia by the middle of the 19th century. On the other hand GF (my girlfriend who I care for dearly even if we have not shacked up together after 18 years) is an honorary pom, or as she reminds me, she’s a Scot. Her father was born and bred there.
Time I was off doing useful things so catch you later.
Colin in Sydney.
PS I have only traced my rellies back to "about" 1763. Jealous of those who have gone back to the 16th century or earlier. Perhaps back then one of us was in the court of King Henry or Queen Elizabth. Unlikely, I know. Just as people who claim to remember past lives were always once Egyptian princesses, never servant or slave girls.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 11 Sep 2009 11:53

Hello Colin,

Yorkshire is still Yorkshire. The Herriot country is an allusion to James Herriot as in All Creatures Great and Small.Alf Wight was the vet who wrote those stories and he lived in the same town as I do. The visitor Centre The World of James Herriot is only a couple of hundred yards from where I live.

PMSL is P*** my self laughing. I am too much of a lady to fill in the first word and I don't think that it is allowed on these boards.

Berona

Berona Report 11 Sep 2009 12:37

Colin - in case you haven't guessed, that word ends with two S's.
Yes, I forgot to mention the 'other' tablets - the patented ones like Vitamin D, Glucosomine & Fish Oil, Nurofen (all recommended by the doc). They all go down before, during and after breakfast so I only have one little one at night and the Nurofen, if I need it.

Diane - that still isn't much, is it? You must look forward to the end of those twelve weeks. I don't know how you do it!

Tec - yes I'm upright. It's a pity everyone else is upside down though. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for those hairy legs waving around in the air..... Very disconcerting.

Persephone

Persephone Report 11 Sep 2009 12:46

Hi Colin,

There are members here in New Zealand south of where I am but Melbourne is definitely south of moi. I do not think I would like to be North of Australia - my trips to Melbourne and Tasmania would probably take longer. I like the fact that I gain a few hours and get to play on the Melbourne Trams before catching the evening flight to Launceston or Hobart.
My Grandmother is from Scotland (Ancrum) but I also have ancestors from Antrim. Plus I go back to the 1400s in two of my branches... but that clever clogs husband of mine stems from Ethelred on one side and William the Conqueror on the other. (she says with a tug at her forelock)
He also has an ancestor who is a brother to Fletcher Christian - that gained us a free pass for the family to go and have a look on "The Bounty"
He does not have an interest in the genes site - all his ancestry has been done for him. This includes this great tomb of a book that he has inherited which his Aunt named the Stud Book.

I won't talk about my weight - but let's just say I will leave it to Allan to climb chimneys in his maids outfit. That is when he is not on about Paddington Bear and raincoats - I think it is all this curry he eats that spices up his life.

Yep you are right about these pages going pfft etc and the other day mine all went into huge print for no particular reason so had to shut down and start again. Probably would be easier typing on a word doc and doing a control C and moving it to here - it can be awkward scrolling up and down to see what you have already typed... and knowing me there will be lots of typos. I used to be a Teleprinter Operator so that shows my age.

Healthwise - just a couple of years ago I got Asthma for the very first time. My work colleagues were concerned about me - by the time I got to A & E clinic I was really bad. I didn't know what it was at the time, but I sure do now. It means I get priority treatment and a free flu jab every year.

Does anybody actually type up 5000 characters on here? Does it count spaces yes it does how unfair? When is a character not a character - when it is a space.

Cheers

Persey of the Underworld.

Good evening/morning all ;-))

I suppose that would make me be the southern most person on our thread, so I'm really down under!!!

Talking about trouble with this site, I'm having the same problems here, pages are taking longer to load, font is either too small or too large and its taking ages to refresh. I am having no other trouble with anything else I'm viewing, so it must be Genes that has the problem. I hope they fix it soon!!

Its very windy here today, probably more of the same tomorrow. Its nice to have a bit of sun:-)
My OH is of to play softball tomorrow, four games. I told him there is no way he can get through four games and then do the same on Sunday. He knows, I'm right he's just stubborn.

I received some new info for my tree today, so I'm off to search, again.
Night all / enjoy your day Brits.

Greetings Everyone from the Principality of Wales,

Just been reading with interest who lives at extremes of the compass.
As I see it, Berona, Colin and Sue, must be furthest East on the global scale. Persephone is furthest South, Linda is furthest North, and I am furthest West. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I hope you are feeling better this evening Diane, and managed to enjoy the sunshine today. I tried to enjoy it by sitting in the garden with a book, having decided to have a whole day off from DIY chores. Then the RAF turned up in force, and decided to play war games directly over my head.
First swooping in over the top of the mountain, then coming at me from the sea. A practice dog fight ensued between two Euro Fighters, Typhoons - the noisiest aircraft ever invented. Peace shattered.

Berona - pleased to hear you are upright, but disturbed that everyone else is upside down. Are your spectacles on the right way up? and is the television the right way up on the stand? - just wondered!.

Colin.......I am disappointed that you have declined the offer of a position at my ancestral home. The position of Butler is still vacant - no formal interview, I never liked them either, having been both sides of the desk.
Please reconsider, as a level headed kind of guy will be needed to keep this lot in check. Especially the maid with the hairy legs.

Hope everyone is well today........

Regards
Tec.

Oh am I the furthest north? A claim to fame at last.

Good evening Tec. We have a small local airfield and an enthusiastic stunt flyer. He zooms all over the place destroying the peace as he practises too, but he won't be as noisy as a couple of RAF planes

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 11 Sep 2009 21:26

Good morning/evening everyone:-) Hope you are all well.

Tec, I was thinking that Colin would make a perfect butler - I'm sure he'd keep us on our toes. Your Duchess is going to have an interesting time with the new staff:-) What a shame your peace was disturbed. We may have to install some kind of weaponry in the garden when we all take residence to make sure you and the Duchess aren't disturbed by RAF games. Talking about residences - I do hope the staff quarters are adequate. I have to say you seem to have a slight obsession with the hairy legged maid:-))

Diane, I hope you can resolve your family problem. You sound like you need a good rest. Is your week off coming up soon? Stress can't be good for your health problems.

Carole the young have so much energy - just the thought of all that softball makes me feel tired.

Colin and Persey - I enjoyed reading your posts. You both have a way with words and it makes for interesting reading.

Good Morning Sue,
Good Evening Linda,

Excitement - the weatherman said that the Space Shuttle, closely followed by the International Space Station would be passing overhead just after 9-15 pm this evening. So of I went out into darkness, dragging a protesting Mrs Tec behind me, insisting that she came too, and low and behold, there they were, shooting in from the West. I was so delighted, Mrs Tec was too, but pretended not to be impressed, although I know she was.
Doesn't take much to get me excited these days.

Linda - Hi, I'll swap your nuisance plane for mine anytime. You are the furthest North on the thread aren't you?

Sue, Yes the Duchess will have some fun with the new staff here. She does "The Look" beautifully, that look can turn a body to a pillar of salt.
I can't wait to see her deal with Allan. Incidently, I am not obsessed with the hairy legged maid, it's just that I find the whole concept hilarious, and can actually visualise Allan in such attire - I giggle at the thought.
Sometimes I try to imagine what everyone on here looks like. Is it possible to "see" people through their writing. I just wonder how accurate my minds eye is......very interesting!
