G'Day Aussies,
Good Evening Brits,

It's been a beautiful day here - not that I noticed much of it, as I have started laying the new carpet, well actually I haven't. I spent most of the day taking up the old carpet from the hall, and up the first staircase.
I did get as far as laying the new underlay along the hall.
The hall has a beautiful Minton mosaic tiled floor, but my OH finds it cold and hard to walk on, so we have it carpeted. That is a bone of contention between us - but then I think that while it's covered, at least it's being preserved for future generations to appreciate.

I hope that your mother is showing signs of improvement today Linda, hopefully, the antibiotics are beginning to take effect.
I also have a history of low potassium levels. This was discovered following a heart attack a few years ago. I expect you know this, but certain foods are high in potassium - I was advised to eat a banana every day. That is difficult for me, as I've never liked bananas. Also I think beetroot is good - but I don't like that either.

I was amused to see that other parents on here have also provided a free taxi service for their offspring. I did this for years. My daughter was seriously into horse riding, the stables being 12 miles away, I seemed to spend my life to and fro there. Also ferrying her and her friends to pop concerts in Liverpool or Manchester. I would then have to hang about those cities in order to fetch them home. Many times I would have also enjoyed the concerts, but it would not have been considered " cool" to turn up with your friends and your dad at a pop concert.
Now history repeats itself, as she now has to ferry her daughter to the riding stables, and gymghana's all over the country.

Tec.

Good morning/evening all,

Linda, I do hope that your mum is out of hospital soon.

Berona, I'm not a sports nut but have always followed England in the cricket, even when they were performing so woefully that I could have cheerfully thrown a glass through the T.V. screen.

We were fortunate that our two children were not keen on sports so we did not have much ferrying about to do. However my daughter did play music and was in the City of Bunbury Concert Band so I had to take her to rehearsals every week and then to the various performances. I was glad when she got her licence

Good morning/evening:))

I'm feeling good this morning. We went very well at the Trivia Night last night. We came 3rd and won $500 for our charity. Not a bad result for a night out with friends. The only annoyance was a table of people - old enough to know better - who used their mobile phones to answer some of the questions. Winning money for a charity by cheating?

Linda I hope your mother is starting to improve. I learnt very early on with my dad to speak up if I wasn't happy about treatment or if I found out something that could help him. Sometimes when his dementia suddenly took a nose-dive I would have to fight to for him to be tested for a urinary tract infection as I had found out that this could cause confusion. I would also insist that he be treated with dignity at all times as I hated him being spoken to like a child. He was well looked after in the nursing home but hospital sometimes seemed a constant battle. My mother would be terribly embarrassed when I got annoyed with a doctor. She felt we should accept whatever they said without argument.

It's very windy here and will be for the next couple of days. I really hate the wind - it makes me irritable so watch out:))

Hope you have a good day/evening.

Hi SueMaid and Tec

You snuck in quietly whilst I was having a bit of fun on the Spider Eating Dog thread that Amanda started.

Sue, I am pleased with your win: it's a pity that it is already allocated otherwise it could have gone towards the cruise! lol

Tec, I am now going to show myself up as a total Philistine....what is Minton mosaic?

Hi Allan,
Are you going to be gainfully employed today?
Cleaning the windows, mowing the lawn, painting the house?

When I dropped us in it last night by saying we were simple.
What I meant was that as guys - we are uncomplicated, lateral thinking, decisive, sometimes impulsive, just simple uncomplicated souls.

I just knew that her who's thread it is would pounce on my unguarded statement.........I shall be more careful in future.

Hi SueMaid.......
Well done at the Trivia Night - or Da Iawn as they say here.
How annoying that people had to cheat - not nice.

Regards
Tec.

Hi, Tec and Allan. Leave the ladies alone on Amanda's thread you big bully, Allan:))

Tec, it isn't nice to see a team cheating. Still it didn't do them any good:))

Tec, I knew what you meant. Of course if something can be interpreted in one of two ways women will always choose the one that shows men in a bad light, but even if Sue wants to use her interpretation it is still not as bad as some of the names my OH uses.

For years I've thought of changing my name by deed-pole to 'Oih, you!

Allan,
Minton is a famous name in ceramics (Google Minton)

A Minton mosaic tiled floor is , well, a mosaic of Minton tiles in the various shapes - rectangular - triangles - squares etc, with a border of oblong shaped ones.
Colours in terracotta, blue , yellow, black, green.

Highly desirable in period properties

Ta for that Tec, you have added to the sum of my knowledge, and believe me I need all the addition possible

Sue, I was just trying to be helpful to Amanda and also to show her a bit of sympathy.

Just so long as Amanda does not suddenly appear on here abusing me! lol

I wouldn't dream of being abusive Allan............I walk lightly on the boards....unless I'm doing the Spider dance of course........that's when it can get a bit lively...........lol

Tec, I don't know a lot about tiles but in Sydney there is a shopping arcade called the Queen Victoria Building which features the most beautiful tiled floor. Can't afford the goods sold in the arcade but I love walking through it. There is also an enormous clock that puts on a wonderful display at various times of the day.

Edit - hello, Amanda:))

Hi Amanda,

It's good to see you back on here.

Now, away from your thread I will admit that the one species that can have me rushing home to change my underwear is snakes.

I can't abide them.

My OH is the same Allan .......I was watching a grass snake swim across a pond in the countryside , turned to him to comment and .........he was nowhere to be seen...........lol

Mind you I guess you have good reason to be scared of them in Oz .

Berona Report 24 Aug 2009 23:28

Gentlemen, gentlemen! I've been reading the way you comment to your ladies on how they look.

Never say 'fantastic'. They know you're lying.

If you have the time to wait while she changes, you can say any of those things you mentioned.

If you don't have time to wait - say "Yes! I thought you would look good in that one - and you do!!" That'll do it.

Never say "Yes, I've always liked that on you". That tells her that it has been worn many times and is OLD - so you are up for the cost of another outfit as soon as the shops open!

When will these men ever learn???

Allan

Allan Report 24 Aug 2009 23:31

Sue, is it the Queen Victoria Building the one that has a huge christmas tree in it going through two or three stories?

I've only been to Sydney once for a meeting and only had time to do a circular walk taking in the State Parliament building, Botanic Gardens, Opera House and the Rocks.

On the way back to my hotel I recall going into a shopping centre and seeing this huge tree

Sue..........
That Arcade sounds interesting........
I should imagine Sydney has changed so much since my visits. I knew people all over the city , but always took a cab.
I spent six weeks once, while the ship was in dry dock, helping a young couple I had befriended on the ship on the way out. They bought a wreck of an old bungalow in a Sydney suburb. Tin roof, vegetation growing up between the floorboards etc
We had so many laughs but in two years they transformed the place into a little palace. No idea which district, but it was elevated, good view of much of the harbour towards the Heads, and a glimpse of the bridge.
Can't imagine it can still be there with all the developement that must have happened.

Hi Berona........

Can't speak for Allan of course, but I shall take your sound advice.
It could keep me out of trouble for years to come........

Why did our mother's never tell us these things?

Ooh Sue: Janey seems a woman with firm views! Consider yourself told off!

Amazingly, when I was trying to trace my errant g/f and it seemed (well, it still does), Janey gave me an enormous amount of help and pointed me in the direction of a couple of websites and also gave me some addies for people who might be able to help further.

It seems difficult to reconcile the two sets of posts!

Tec, I'm afraid that I am not very practical! I know how things operate, or are put together in theory, but translating that into practice is totally bewildering

Because, Tec, Mothers are also part of the sisterhood and are grooming their sons to be ready for the continuing mystery of 'knowing what a woman is thinking' which in itself is a bit like trying to nail jelly to a wall

lol
