Hi Persey

I live near Ballarat, its nice here very hilly, though. (and dry)

I'm not sure who gets the day off for Melbourne Cup, but I have always had the day off. I actually went one year, its a fantastic day out.

I remember having a lovely piece of home-made fruit loaf toasted - it was jam packed with all sorts of fruit and so so thick and mouth watering - it was in a little shop in Ballarat across from Coles - it was a coffee place but they also sold ornaments and knick-knacks etc. It had a name like Why, Where or When something.

I also like Adelaide - but just hated driving from Mt Gambier to get there - that is such a boring stretch of road. Where as getting around Victoria there is always something to see, something to do or something to climb - as in Hanging Rock.

Kia Ora to you too Colin.

Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa.

Careful Perse - just as well you are doing Maori-speak at this time of day. The people with the itchy RR finger might report you for not speaking English - but hopefully, they are asleep. Not like Susanwithnumbers.

Carole - is it a public holiday in Melbourne for the Cup? or just individual businesses (where the boss wants to go to the races!)?

In NSW, most places stop work while the cup is running and usually someone provides a TV to watch it on. I think some people go to the races without knowing the difference between the front and back of a horse - they just like to be seen (some in the most ridiculous of fashions) and hopefully, photographed. Cameramen wander around the grounds for an hour before the race - then the race lasts for only a few minutes - and it's all over until next year!

BTW has anyone seen anything of Alison?

Hi Berona

They were only nice Maori words - and anyone can google them.

Melbourne Cup - people here also take a television to work to watch it etc.
Most works will run their own sweep.
Colin says a few posts back that Victoria get a holiday.

The Queen might get excited watching the horses racing but it does not do much for me. I would rather watch show jumping - that looks far more skillful.

I will regally depart this time.

Yes, sweeps are run everywhere. I miss my street sweep. Where I lived before for more than 40 years, there were always sweeps for the Cup and now that I live in an area where it would be great for a sweep (a villa/townhouse complex) the residents are a mixed bunch of races and attitudes and are not interested in anything like that.
'bye for now. talk to you again later.

Berona..
Most businesses are closed for the day, shops are open.
I don't think country towns close, the next town on from me don't have the day off, they have their own horse race.

Persey.. next time I go into Ballarat, I will check out that shop, was it a bakery?
Ive been to Hanging Rock, I don't know why they called it Hanging Rock though?
If you ever come back over, you should take a drive down the Great Ocean Road, its spectacular!!

Good afternoon to Berona, Carole, Colin and Persephone,

Is there a race on tomorrow??

I hate horse racing, I always lose: I really should try to run faster but seem to run out of puff!!

Well, Susanwithnumbers has kicked me into touch now that she knows I am not rich.

Allan..
We had a warm day here today 30, a bit overcast..showers tomorrow!!

Is your weather over there tropical? I know it gets very hot.
My sister in law lives just out of Perth.

Allan Report 2 Nov 2009 08:11

Carole, not tropical but more Mediterranean although up in the north yes it is tropical..not for me: I prefer the cooler weather. In summer I'm like a Troglodyte: I only venture out when it has cooled down. I stay in my cave the rest of the day

Allan

Carolee Report 2 Nov 2009 08:24

Allan..You would like our weather then:-))

I'm a bit like you, I don't like the heat too much, I tend to stay indoors where its cool with the A/C running!!

Troglodyte, my hubby uses that word!
