Berona Report 31 Oct 2009 04:14

Hello Persephone - I'm here. I pop in between doing other things. Looks like I should have popped in last night, as the thread was quite busy! and all the less to read to catch up! Sometimes I take so long to catch up with the thread in the morning, that by the time I do get to the newest posts, they're asking "where's Berona?".

I think Friends Reunited and Facebook are great. However, you will always get those who abuse it in one way or another and it is necessary to be careful what you say. I joined both but don't bother adding friends or photos to my own profile. I use it more to find what happened to former acquaintances, neighbours who moved away, etc. Again, I didn't use my real name and I'm not interested in collecting a large number of 'friends'.

Hi Berona

I am surprised that you have the time, what with knitting a hat and boots that meet at the middle for Tec - and all the lavatorial goings on at your household, plus your dusting etc as I seem to remember you even keep your wheelie bin bright and shiney.

I have left facebook to the next two generations of my lot, I can go in and have a look when I am at their houses.

My oldest friend I have had since I was five and she keeps introducing me as her oldest friend when I am nearly six months her junior. (so unfair of her) We have a lot of laughs when we get together.

You were talking about the other threads on here - I was wondering whether it was me, as half the time I have no idea what they are on about.

love a bewildered Perse

I would be very busy if I did all this knitting! Seems that quite a few want bed socks and now Tec wants me to add to the nightcap he ordered! I told him I was making it very long so that he can wrap it around his neck to keep warm - and he wants me to make socks that come up to meet it!!...I just hope he isn't very tall!

Hi there Persey and Berona, I hope you are both well:-))

Its very warm down here today..Ive got the A/C going and its not even Summer yet!
Think I may take a dip in the pool later, my poor OH and son are out in the heat playing Softball.

I'm on face book, but I'm only friends with my family and relatives here and in the UK, plus a few of my girl friends I went to School with, I find its a great way to keep in contact with my relly's. I don't play those games on there, but I know lots of people that do.

Greetings to my Aussie friends/I hope our Brits are sleeping well;-))

Hello Carole...That's a good way to use FB but from what I've seen, some people deserve to get into strife with it. I wonder why it is necessary to collect lots and lots of 'friends'. Must be some loneliness somewhere.

I joined the Farmtown but couldn't make head or tail of it and have lost the interest in it now. I have other things to do which I find more interesting.

Yes, it's quite warm here too, but the sun isn't far off going behind a building here and will be off my western windows, so it should cool down quickly then. Only a few days ago, I couldn't get warm! Crazy, isn't it?

Hello, ladies. Just nipped in while the potatoes are cooking. It's warm here too but quite pleasant. I'll pop in later.

Hi Carolee and Sue,

This warmth thing is only during the day here - when the sun goes down it can be very cold and we have been having snow in the South Island which at one time would be unheard of at this time of year. My mother used to say we had to change to warm clothes at Easter and as soon as we got to Labour weekend in October we were to change to summer wear. Actually it wasn't only her, the hospital board used to put the heating on at Easter regardless and then turn it off on the same day in October every year no matter what. People used to go into Hospital with a broken leg and come out with pneumonia.

About three years ago I was staying with my daughter and son-in-law in Wellington and they used to play scrabble on Facebook. It was so slow - she would do a move and then when he got home he would do a move.It would take them weeks to finish it. I thought to h*ll with this and gave them a scrabble board.

We have been sitting very quietly avoiding all the trick or treaters - another thing we have inherited from the USA. I was in the US and one evening people arrived at the door and they were wanting a jack - I thought they needed to change their tyre and was calling out to my cousin to come and help etc. No these bods were on a scavenger hunt and the jack they wanted is what we call a knucklebone.

Oh dear, you've just reminded me! When I first came to live here, I had three littlies (with mum in the background) knock on my door. Luckily, I had some sweets and offered them some.

Next year, I had some nice sweets ready for them - and nobody knocked on my door - so I ate them all myself! (NOT on my diet program!)

Now, I've forgotten all about it - I suppose I will hear a knock at any time!!

Persephone Report 31 Oct 2009 08:21

I went all out one year Berona and had heaps - but there were all these older teens that kept turning up wanting some, not just the littlies. I had bought way too many as well and yep each time I went past the piano where they were sitting I would just have one (they were those mini chocolate bars). Trouble was I was going past the piano an awful lot.

I've had no-one knock at my door this evening. I guess there's time yet. I just made up a few bags with sweets. We'll have to eat them I guess. No point in giving them to my daughter - she doesn't allow the children much in the way of sweets. Little Mr Three fills up on rubbish if you let him then won't eat meals. Sounds normal to me but his mum worries about it.

I'm taking my mum to a doll and bear show tomorrow and then lunch. She doesn't drive so loves a day out and she also loves dolls - especially porcelain dolls. Last year we spoke to a young girl who had saved her money all year and bought a beautiful handmade baby doll. It was so life-like and beautifully dressed. I'm more for the bears so I think I'll leave my purse at home:-))

Hi Sue,
I'm going to make sure I'm out this evening!
I plan to go the pictures about 6pm and come back at 9pm.
Hi Perse and Berona.

Persephone Report 31 Oct 2009 09:01

Trouble is Pat at 9pm it is only just getting dark here with this daylight saving lark.
It also makes fireworks night really late for the little ones.
Fireworks have only just gone on sale here - they start on Oct 27th and they finish on the day itself. It's to stop all these bangers etc being let off before the day etc. Plus they are trying to get people to attend proper functions which are safer and the SPCA urges people to be responsible with their animals let them hide and try to drown out the sound with the TV or music. We had a case years ago where the baby giraffe at the zoo got petrified and he ran amok and killed himself.

Our only bangers will probably be sausages.

Cheers
Perse

Fireworks are banned here for private use, Persey. Well in NSW anyway. I can see the point but I remember lovely Bonfire Nights when the street would get together and we would pool our fireworks, bring eats and drinks and the men would safely let off the fireworks to the delight of the kids. All done safely by some but not by others.

Hi Perse,
I can hear some fireworks. I did mind that. It's the trick or treaters that annoyme. i don't remember doing it when I was young. It's only a thing of the middle 80's and it's Saturday and I'm sure the youngsters will be out.
It's Saturday morning and I've got to go the launderette and the hairdressers etc .etc.

We have a street get together once a year here - where we get to say hello to new neighbours etc and then we make up a new contact sheet for everyone - sort of a neighbourhood watch. Of course it is a barbie night with salads etc and everybody has a good time, even the sandflies.

edit: just seen your post Pat - halloween all over till next year as it has gone 10pm here.

Berona Report 31 Oct 2009 09:14

Our Cracker Night used to be 24th May - Empire Day - but when we no longer celebrated that, it was moved to the Queen's Birthday - celebrated in June. This was more to make it colder and uninviting - but it didn't stop the bonfires. Then the sale of fireworks was banned altogether because they became too dangerous - although anyone driving past Canberra seemed to be able to buy some somewhere!

Now, we have this big celebration on the Harbour for New Year's Eve and it is organised by the Council. Much safer and entertaining too!

SueMaid Report 31 Oct 2009 09:19

Sorry Pat - didn't see you there. Hope you are well.

Berona I forgot that you can buy fireworks in Canberra.

It's been nice talking to you ladies. However, it is almost time for The Bill and since my DVD recorded is not working, I have to go and watch it - and hope I don't nod off!

Good night those in Oz and Kiwiland - and Pat, have a nice day.

Good evening to Berona, Carole, Persephone and Sue

Good morning to Pat

Pat I can remember doing Trick or Treat in the UK in the 1950's, also Carol Singing and hanging outside Pubs around about this time with the "Penny for the Guy" scam, err routine.

A whole mob of us from the street where i lived would go out together doing these various things!
