This early in the day? tongues will wag you know, especially if I spread rumours

Hi Linda,
When I enter the realms of fantasy, it usually means I'm bored.
It's such a dull grotty day here. I've done my daily chores, boring, decided what's for dinner, even more boring - took the dog for a walk, didn't see a living soul.
Settled down to some research, fell out big time with one of my ancestors,
so then my mind wandered elsewhere, and I thought I'd send greetings to you all.
Hope you are having a more exciting day

Hi Barbra,
Well lets hope you win the Euro Lottery then, we'll all be off to Oz, I've promised everyone a cruise when I wn - can't wait.
Hope your little dog is ok, they usually respond well to antibiotics.
I was aapparently taken to Stranraer when I was 3 months old, but have never been to Scotland since. Who knows? maybe one day. Always fancied the Western Isles.
Well I have to make myself useful now - yes, I know that's a joke, but it has been known. Speak to you later - take care

LindainHerriotCountry Report 30 Oct 2009 17:23

Sorry Tec, I didn't mean to ignore you, I just got called away.

It has been a non descript type of a day here as well, the only highlight being that we walked into the market square for a nice lunch.

We had the car serviced on Wednesday, that cost far more than normal because the rear windscreen washer fitting had broken and had to be replaced. They then discovered that one of the rear springs had broken,so it is booked in on Monday to get that replaced, I dread to think how much that will cost.

In the meantime when OH took the car out yesterday, it started to make an awful noise possibly from one of the brakes,so he took it back last night and they have had it all day. Every time we rang up, they said that they couldn't find out what was wrong with it and were muttering about wheel bearings, so that doesn't sound good. We just got a phone call to say that they think they have cracked it, but didn't say what that meant. So OH has set off to walk half an hour to collect it. Time for a new car I think.

Just before he set out, he put some clothes in the tumble dryer, but it won't switch on, it is just making a funny noise and their is a terrible smell of burning. It is safe enough, so he will have to look at that tonight. I am wondering what else will go wrong as these things are supposed to come in threes.

Tecwyn Report 30 Oct 2009 19:28

Oh dear Linda, sounds like you've had an eventful, and potentially expensive day. Lets hope that if a third thing has to go, it's something cheap to replace, like a torch, or the loo roll holder?
I think that once a car starts to get multiple problems, it's time to get rid, they can easily become money pits, good money after bad.

I can see you behind the wheel of a black BMW sports coupe, zipping about the Dales, snazzy check cap, scarf flying in the breeze behind you.

We had a tumble dryer sieze up, gave off a burning smell. Apparently the bearings had gone. Would have cost nearly as much to repair, as replace, so had a new one. When you live in Wales in the winter, a tumble dryer is an essential piece of kit.

Said on the news yesterday that people who live on the Welsh coast will have to take to the hills because of global warming, and rising tide levels. As the beach is about 500 yds from my house, we are standing by the door with our bags packed.
However, as the sea has to get up a steep gradient to the house, I don't think we need go tonight, so I'm not worried, unlike my daughter, who may be thinking of her inheritance - ha ha ha .

Good morning/evening folks:-))

Barbra how is it that if you win the euro lucky dip you'll all be coming over here to Oz. What about we Aussies? What do we get - other than a load of Poms expecting to be entertained? At least if Tec wins we're all going on a cruise.

Linda - we don't realise how much we use a car until it's off the road.

Tec - we had a news article on the telly the other day about how our coast line is receding because of global warming. The program showed a number of houses perched on cliffs that are predicted to fall in the sea at some stage. I'm not saying it won't happen but sand erosion has always been an on going problem. Having said that the earth seems to be very unstable at the moment. Earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, bushfires. Mother Nature telling us that we may have a handle on everything else but she's still the boss.

Well the third thing was cheap Tec, just after I posted,I went into the garage and the bulb blew.

The mechanics decided that the problem was just in the brake. When they do the service, they just strip them down as far as looking at the pads, so today they took the whole thing apart, knocked all the rust out and put it back together. That seems to have cured the noise, or I hope it has. No parts to pay for, but their time presumably. OH told them just to put it on the bill on Monday.

When I took the wet clothes out of the tumble dryer, I couldn't believe how much he had put in, a double load I think. I have taught him how to use the washing machine on the ground that he has more dirty clothes because he is always digging, or working at the cinema, or going for bike rides or rambling etc.

Seems he washed one lot and put them in the dryer, but forgot to switch it on, so when he had washed the second lot, he just put those in the dryer as well, but that shouldn't have stopped it really. he took the back off and poked around a bit, He turned the drum by hand to check it hadn't seized, then put it together again. It seems to be working fine now. I won't leave it unattended just in case. They don't cost much,so it won't be the end of the earth if we need a new one, although it isn't that old.

I saw the news about abandoning the Welsh villages. Some chap was being interviewed who thought that they should spend millions on sea defences. I think that I would just prefer a nice new house further in land. Of course they probably wouldn't get full value for the houses because the fact that they are vulnerable to flooding would blight them and reduce their market value.

I remember just a few years ago when the Holbeck Hall Hotel fell into the sea near Scarborough

Good Moorning Sue, Hope you are well,

You are right, the whole world does seem to be going through a very disturbed period, with freak weather conditions. The seasons have definately changed in the UK. We no longer seem to get the freezing conditions of ice and snow we once knew. Now we get milder, wetter conditions, with high winds and gales.
There have been areas of severe errosion on the East coast, with many people losing their property to the sea. A few years ago, we were told that western areas, including Wales were actually reclaiming land, with the sea receeding. Now that theory has been reversed.
Over time the map of our coastline has constantly changed. There is an area near here, three miles inland, where sea shells, and fossilised sea creatures can be found.
Nature is in charge, sometimes she is cruel, but we have to learn to learn to live with her, on her terms - we are after all, insignificent in the grand scheme of things.

I'm relieved to know the third thing was something as mundane as a light bulb. Should you wish to send your OH here for a week, I will teach him the finer points of domestic science. This will of course be from a male perspective, so will naturally make more logic and sense to him.

Seems like things may not be so bad for the car after all, so lets hope you get off relatively lightly. Sometimes, I think things conspire to worry you. Worry them back, give them a good kicking.
I am not of course referring to your OH here.

Thank you for your kind offer Tec, but I think I would rather train OH myself. You might lead him into bad habits.

You've had years to do this Linda. Anyway I don't have any bad habits.

SueMaid Report 30 Oct 2009 20:51

I've noticed a rather worrying trend with my OH. Before he retired he would do things my way around the house. Now he's developing his own ways of doing things. Far be it for me to complain to him about it but I'm often tempted to ask why?

LindainHerriotCountry Report 30 Oct 2009 20:52

Well when he was working he was away such a lot, that he forgot what he had been taught by the time he came back. I have only been training him intensively since he stopped working. In general he is coming along well.

What do you mean, you have no bad habits? You are male and that says it all.

I am off to watch TV for a while, I will pop in later on

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 30 Oct 2009 21:12

Sue.........

"Now he's developing his own ways of doing things"

Wrong.........He has always had his own way of doing things. But in the interests of domestic peace and harmony he considered it prudent to do things your way.
Now he is a liberated man, he thinks the time has come to do things his way - the right way.
I know this to be true - been there - done that - got the teeshirt.

Barbra, I'm in a syndicate for tonight's big lotto draw, but it is only $20,000,000.00

Should we hit the jackpot AND be the only ones, my share will be $754,718.00

The way petrol prices are going at least I would be able to fill my car up!!

Hope you are bright eyed and bushy tailed today?

"He's very good around the house"

Honestly Sue, no offense, but you make him sound more like a pet than anything else

You could have added "does not chew cushions and will bring my slippers if I ask" lol
