Perth is a nice modern city but to me it has no 'soul' it's sterile. People in the South west often joke that the best view of Perth is the one from the rear view mirror.

Perse, I an well versed with all those descriptions. In our house they are all interchangeable but we do have to remember that although are children were both born in the UK, they were brought up in Oz and so we use the ozzie words.

Bother, I drew a lovely text birthday cake (well OK a simple one,) to add to Berona's birthday wish, but when I post it the text formatting on Genes puts everything to the left of the page, so I can't work out how to get the candles in the centre of the cake. Oh well I meant well.

Hello Linda, hope everything is settling down. Nice to see you pop up regularly here.
It seems quiet at the moment. Not surprising, as it's past 10 pm- 7pm in WA, midnight in NZ and morning tea time in the UK?
I just remember the trams in Sydney. I didn't live anywhere near the network but as a child had a lot of visits to North Shore Hospital (long story) and saw them on those occasions.
They ripped up the north shore tram lines in 1958 and the last one in the eastern suburbs ran about 1961.
There is a newish line now, more a light rail as it routinely stops at every platform along the route.. It runs mostly along the route of an old goods (freight) rail line. The cynic in me says it was built to serve the Casino, certainly the flashiest and busiest stop along the line, but it does go further into the inner west.
Our beloved Lord (lady) Mayor, known as the rottweiler, wants to extend it down George St in the city. Great idea. Now Clover, can you explain what you are going to do with the cars and buses while they build the thing? Oddly enough, she is totally against the planned underground metro line. This would be privately operated, like the light rail, and would help break the power of the tram, train and bus drivers union that is stifling transport development in this city.
End of rant.

I remember trolley buses in Newcastle when i was young. They ran on wheels, but had two poles on top which collected the power from overhead lines. they are also sadly long gone.

Lovely day here again, hope it is for you too, though it is rather windy.
Maybe you are busy on the allotment?

I am thinking of buying a bread maker, so never mind Nigella, I shall seek your advice. I have a "thing" about bread, but find shop bread awful. We don't have a decent independant baker anywhere near, so think I will have a go at making my own.
Do you have one? do you use it? and any advice would be welcome.
Off now to buy another polystyrene loaf from the shop.

I have actually been out delivery Library Books on Wheels.

Yes I have a bread maker, I first got one about two and a half years ago and have never bought a loaf of bread since.
I can't remember the brand I first had, but it was a Healthy Options model,so the recipes had practically no sugar in them. Unfortunately the clips holding the tin in place were very small and eventually it got to the stage where the tin would come out of place as soon as it started to knead. So I took it back to Argos,who would have replaced it, but didn't do that model any more,so I ended up buying a far more expensive model as I wanted it to be stainless steel to match the rest of the kitchen.

The new one has been fine, but has conventional recipes which are full of butter and sugar.I tended to make just two types of loaves and luckily could remember the ingredients.

Now whenever I use a new recipe, I just alter it to be more like the healthy options ones. If you do buy one, avoid getting one which is just a fast bake type,as that type of bread is more dense. Just a simple cheap one, with a basic range of programmes does the trick ( I know you are mega rich, but I just mean that the over the top fancy types have so many programmes that you will never use)

I really would recommend them, if you do get one, I do have some tips to get the best out of it. I know people buy them and don't use them, but I wouldn't be without mine.

Thank you for your advice Linda - I am convinced now that I should get a bread maker - I will peruse the Argos Cataloque later to see what they have. They will deliver here too, postage a lot less than it would cost me in petrol going to fetch one.
I recently bought a Halogen Cooker ( I like gadgets) and although I haven't so far put it to its full use, I think I could live without it. Sorry now that I didn't put the money towards a bread maker.
I haven't eaten white bread for years, now buy the loaf with seeds in it, but have gone off that now too.
The French have really nice bread, but I can't hop over the Channel all the time.

Like you, and Colin, I also remember the old trolley buses. The ones I knew disappeared in the 50s. Great pity. Also like Persephone's father I remember with affection the trams in San Francisco, joy riding up and down for no other reason than to enjoy the ride - happy days.

Berona - Happy Birthday!! Last birthday I didn't know you and now we are friends and I'm so glad we are. Have the best of days.

I've never thought of buying a bread maker. We don't eat a lot of bread so I usually just get a loaf from the local bakery and quite often some of it goes into the worm farm. We tend to buy bread rolls at the weekend. We are now eating lettuce, radishes and spring onions from the garden. The tomatoes are on their way so I'm sure we'll have plenty for Christmas.

Hope you are full of the joys of Spring this morning. The produce of the garden sounds good.
A worm farm? What do you do with them? My garden is full of worms, they seem to breed very successfully, as do the snails, and slugs, and the perishing vine weevils.
We do discuss some bizarre subjects on your wonderful thread.

We certainly do have some strange discussions, Tec. OH has a worm farm and puts in food scraps much like a compost heap. They eat their way through the food and it's their "castings" that are invaluable as is the liquid fertiliser that we get. It's something that my OH has been interested in for awhile but he really hasn't had the time to set it up. Now he has retired he is enjoying the worm farm and the larger vegetable garden he has set up.

Tec, we have a breadmaker. It works well and we usually bake a loaf when I have made a pan of soup...a very hearty meal!

Ours was inexpensive so we didn't knead much dough!!
