We all I will also go.

Forecast yesterday was for thunderstorms...now been amended to Sunny with a top of 29oC so I will do a bit more digging before the day heats up.

For Southern Hemispherians I'll try to get back on later. To all in Pommie land, enjoy the extra hour in bed!

Regards

Good night Tec. Thanks for the kind words about the flowers. I'm still waiting for the ones which Allan sent me. At least, I know they will have a perfume - but what kind, I'm not sure.

Sorry I've been missing for a while. I've been hemming up a pair of 'new' slacks to wear to-day. Only had them for two years but couldn't wear them because they were too long. Decided last night to do something about it.

I do intend to still be here when I'm 93 - but that's a long way off yet. Cheeky Linda!!!

Sorry again for disappearing but I had a phone call and was chatting for ages. It would seem you've all gone so I wish my Aussie friends a great Sunday - hope it stays dry for you Berona - and our friends on the other side of the world pleasant dreams.

Persephone Report 25 Oct 2009 04:48

Brown must have been the colour for demob suits - my father wore his and wore his and wore his - it came out for every wedding and funeral. It took my poor mother years and years to get him to purchase a new one. He always was thrifty and what he couldn't do with left overs. He could make a rice pudding last and last add another egg one night add some more milk the next. When he was in his eighties, I was hanging out his bedsocks on the line and they were just all darns - I don't think there was an original bit of sock there except for the bit at the top.

I am not suprised Berona that you have had the slacks for two years before altering, you have been too busy knitting coloured beanies etc for keeping members of the board in fashion.

I had to look up passata - I don't know whether we have that here - we have tomato paste and tomato puree will that do? I reckon that sauce will go down well in my ratatouille.

I can't believe how fast this board moves - it leaves the others at the bus stop - I was on here late last night - been out all day and come back and it has moved forward several pages. I need to go on a speed reading course.

G'day Persephone....there is nothing wrong in being thrifty.

I reckon that those of us who have, or at least had, some guidance from our parents who had to endure the war, will have weathered the several financial crises better than some others!

Berona, at least you only had to adjust the length of your slacks, not the waist!

I hate the days when the clocks alter. I have just been round changing the times on everything. Some of them are so complicated, especially the timer on the boiler. It doesn't help that it was installed tucked away in a corner under the boiler,so it is just about impossible to get to.

Passata is sieved tomatoes and comes in cartons which you pour out. It is more like the tomato juice which you would drink, only thicker. Tomato paste or puree is too strong, but you could use it and water it down a lot

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomato_pur%C3%A9e gives an explanation

You are right Allan - we have always coped whatever the situation. I had hand me downs and my kids had hand me downs.... but I see in our paper today that the recession has hit some youngsters hard as they are getting less pocket money. One young chap reckons he will be in for a windfall when it is all over and is keeping tabs on how much his mum will owe him.

My dad was a cook in the army, if we did not have enough silver beet he would add puha to it (puha is a sort of dandelion thistle), we did not have a fridge and if the meat went a bit off he would soak it in vinegar, rinse it off and cook it and we all ate it. He only knew frugal - his dad died when he was 13 and he was the eldest boy so it was all down to him to keep the family his mother and his six siblings.

Perse who is heading back to bed it's heading for midnight here.

Morning, evening everyone!
The sun is actually shining here in Devon!

Berona Report 25 Oct 2009 10:52

Well, Allan - I'm afraid you're right about me not having to alter the waist, but that's because these particular slacks were bought when I was at my heaviest and are a size larger than the ones I returned to when I lost weight - but no, I didn't have to alter the waist - and I should have needed to!!

I will say, though, that they are 'roomy' and being nice and new, they made me feel good. I felt the need to get some use out of them before they get too big (tongue in cheek, wishful thinking).

Had a good barbie - only a few sprinkles which didn't worry us. Took photos and had a chocolate birthday cake made by my 10y.o. granddaughter. I even got pressies too so felt quite indulged.

Hello all

Linda...you must have a sixth sense, I was going to ask you what Passata was. I had never heard of it.
I make my own pasta sauce as well, from scratch. I shall have a go at doing it your way (if you don't mind)...it sounds yum!!

Allan..You must have sent that wind over to us, as today was a bit cool and windy!!

Hi Ali.. I haven't seen you on for a couple of days..I hope you are well:-))

Good night Aussies/ Have a great day Brits :-))

Just a quick hello before I retire for the night. So glad you had a lovely day Berona - you were really spoilt weren't you. You certainly deserve to be.

Devon in the sunshine, Pat. How beautiful. Devon is lovely even in dull weather.

Allan - so you were hoping I'd adopt you. How on earth would I explain to my children that they have a new sibling:-))

Talk tomorrow.

Berona, when you said that you had a birthday coming up, I didn't realise you meant yesterday. How silly of me, but i am glad you had a lovely time

I am worried about the pasta sauce because it is the best one I have ever found and is simple to make. It does look a bit odd when it is cooked, until you blitz it and it thickens up. I always use the same ingredients i.e the cheapest tinned toms and Tesco's own cheap passata, so it is very economical. My worry is that it may turn out to be horrible if you use different ingredients, then Tec would think that I am a rubbish cook and would not engage me at the manor

Sleep well Sue

This feels like a very long day to me. I normally get up at 7-30am at this time of year. However, because we put the clocks back an hour, and my silly dog was confused, he came bounding into the bedroom at 6-30am, insisted on thumping me until in exasperation I gave in and got up.

Have spent two hours sifting through and deleting silly Hot Matches, saving possible matches. Now cross eyed.

Sunny here with a cold westerly wind. The sea is whooffing (good word)
up the beach, with a good surf, but no surfers today.

Time for coffee and fruit cake..................

Regards
Tec.

Good morning/evening everyone. I think I'm too early for everyone.

Tec - it does take a little time to adjust to the change in time. Hope your Duchess is feeling better by the day and you're getting your sleep too.

Good evening/morning everyone. It's RAINING! Light but steady rain has fallen all night and still coming down, although forecast for clearing later.

I still have a couple of days to my birthday, but it was yesterday as far as the get-together was concerned. I'm happy to wait for it, but weekends are the only time we can all get together. Thanks for the good wishes everyone. I quite enjoy the idea of being 39 even though my daughter isn't that enthusiastic about being 39 and yet she is planning her next one already and it isn't for another six months! How can you not like being 39 and yet, look forward to being 40?
