Allan Report 18 Oct 2009 00:42

Berona, I'm sure that we have stocked up our house with items from garage sales etc.

We have now decided to have a massive clear out starting with my 'study'

I love reading and hate throwing books out, often reading them several times. My OH has now threatened to either blindfold me when we start or she will do it when I'm not at home.

The sacrifices we make.....!

Berona Report 18 Oct 2009 00:57

A couple of months ago, I had the choice of either buying another set of book-shelves - or having a clean up. As I had no room for another piece of furniture, I elected to halve my supply of books (those "I might want to read again"). It was hard, but the hospital and charity shops did well out of me...Since then, I try to put my latest purchase on the shelf and throw out one of the 'older' books. That's not easy either, and I seem to keep getting behind with the throwing out part.

After my son had a bowel op in Sept.08, he sat around (depressed) and scared to move - so he began doing jigsaws. He knew he had to have another op in March of this year, but was more prepared this time and his recovery was much better than before. However, I had already bought a couple of big jigsaws, ready for the recovery, but he wasn't interested this time - so they are still unopened. I know that once I open them, I will be like a junkie with them - so do I open them or keep them for presents for the grandkids? Decisions, decisions!

Hello AlisoninOz. Nice to talk to you again. Hope the boys don't get you confused with the other Alison. Where in Oz do you live? i think we will have to keep a list.....We have Linda and Lynda, and plenty of Sues, and two Alisons!
Very quiet this afternoon. Yesterday, they came from everywhere! Probably all having an afternoon snooze. It is that lazy type of weather - and not before time, but it could get a lot hotter yet!

Hi Berona,

I live in Gloucester NSW. I have talked to some of the boys before but it's been a while so they'll have to get used to me again.

Good evening all:-))

I was just reading a lovely thread on living in a field, which I thought was really nice.
Then, some nasty piece of work just ruined it by adding negative and unwarranted comments...Grrrrrrrr...rant over, so sorry!!!

I hope my beautiful Aussies have enjoyed their Sunday, Ive just spent the day doing my normal, getting ready for another working hectic week!!
Also that our beautiful British friends have an equally delightful day:-))))

Hello Carole. Just popped in and read your post. I jumped out and went to re-read my post on the 'field' thread to see if it was me who wrote something to offend you. I think you might have meant George ? I hope so.

I love my van, although I don't use it much - but as I said there, I could happily live in it. Only problem is that there would be times when I would be all alone in the park and that would make me nervous.
I leave it there and the kids pay the fees for it these days because they use it and I'm happy with that. They get many happy hours, days and holidays out of it.

Hi Berona

You are absolutely correct, I did mean George.
I was so angry when I posted that. Sorry:-))

My parents owned a caravan that overlooked the ocean, we spent so many happy holidays there, after my father passed away my mother was not able to return, so we ended up having to sell the caravan.

Sydneybloke Report 18 Oct 2009 12:52

Hello Barbra, just to be serious for a moment and answer your question.
How hot it gets in Australia depends on where you are. Most of the following refers to our major cities, the various state capitals.
The highest temperature ever recorded anywhere was over 50 C many years ago in central Queensland. The hottest streak was in the remote north west at a place called Marble Bar where for over three months continuously the daily maximum was above 100 F (38 C).
The coldest ever recorded was around minus 25 but that was 6000 feet up in the mountains. Most of us live in slightly kinder climates, near the coast.
In general the further inland you go the hotter it gets. Even 30 km / 20 miles makes a difference.
I am in Sydney, as is Berona. The western outskirts of Sydney can be 5 or more degrees C hotter than the city. SueMaid is south and she has a similar climate with a bit more rain. Close to the coast we often get relief from high temperatures through an afternoon change we call a southerly buster. In recent years our highest was 44 C on New Years day, and hotter in the western suburbs away from the coast. Thankfully, days above 40 are rare. Mid thirties is more usual on the hottest days.
Brisbane (I forget which of our friends lives there) is more pleasant in "winter" but to me is unpleasantly humid in summer and that is saying something because Sydney is also humid in summer..
Melbourne (where Carolee lives) is hotter, and drier, sometimes with very strong hot northerly winds blowing in from the central deserts. This partly explains why they get more savage bushfires than we do.
Perth city is some km inland, and is probably our hottest state capital, with a number of days each year over 40 C. I also forget who lives there. The maid with the hairy legs lives a couple of hours south of Perth.
Darwin is by far our closest major city to the equator but being in the tropics, it has a wet and a dry season and the max is low 30s all year round. They are moving into the wet season. I have never been there, but I have two nieces living there and a cousin so it is on my short list.
We don't normally see snow in most of our large cities. Canberra and Hobart (and to a lesser extent Sydney and Melbourne) can have snow on nearby mountains. Snow falling below 1000 metres above sea level is unusual, and even at that elevation it doesn't last long.
This of course is too much information but I think that "hot" is not the answer you were after.
There is an old bushman's tale about the hottest places on earth: two are towns in far west New South Wales, the other has its usual meaning. The answer is:
3. Hay,
2. Hell and
1. Booligal.
Time I was in bed. Good night/good afternoon all. Hope the Brits enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon and that the Aussies and Persey had a good week end. Colin.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 18 Oct 2009 13:11

I don't know how you stand the heat Colin. Mid 20's is lovely to me. I can cope with hotter when I am on holiday, but only ifI am lazing under a sun shade by a pool and reading a book. I couldn't cope with everyday life in such temperatures, but of course your buildings are designed to keep the heat out. Our houses are designed to keep heat in, so when we have a hot spell, it gets too warm inside.
