I know I'm slow at times - but this is ridiculous! I have been one hour and seventeen minutes getting here! My computer is like a naughty child - it has its good and bad days. To-day is one when I want to go straight out and buy a new processor - but I'd better pay for the new specs first and get over that one!
Diane - glad you're back. You can pretend you're in another world on here, so you can turn off, if you need to.
Alison - glad the fires are out. Makes it a bit scary with January still so far away, doesn't it?
Allan, the words Displaced Persons really says it all, doesn't it? I haven't had anything to do with any of them, but I do remember when they were being re-settled. There were no records of them at all. They had all been destroyed. I imagine that new records have been produced since, but if they didn't make application, it could be difficult to find what you are looking for.
Sue - thanks for the 'forward'. Congratulations on your re-election. I know what you mean about nobody wanting the position. I packed up the books each year, but ended up back in a Treasurer's position for ten years!
Tec - Never!!! I couldn't look like Dame Edna if I tried! Besides - he's a man! Thanks for forwarding the email on.

Sue, You can have some fun on committees can't you?
I remember one committee that I was Branch Secretary of a national charity. We met in the Committee Room at the local library. One of our members was a dear sweet elderly lady, who raised enormous amounts of funds through running coffee mornings, raffles, opening her garden to the public etc. She said she couldn't sit at the committee table on a straight chair for two hours, so sat at the side in a leather easy chair. This lovely lady always turned up in the most flamboyant floral frocks, and enormous hats. As the meeting got under way, I would start to read the minutes etc. This lady would fall asleep. Fine - except that she would start snoring, and it was enough to raise the rafters. I would always have to shout over it. Not only that, but she would slide down in the chair, her hat tipped over her eyes, revealing the most enormous pair of pink bloomers, with elastic at the knees. Being a fool by nature, I would get a fit of the giggles, and choking, with tears running down my face, could not carry on. This would enfuriate the Chairman, a crusty old man, with no sense of humour. One day, while discussing who would represent the brach at a members funeral, she woke up with a start, and said in a loud voice, "Oh that would be lovely, how exciting, I'm sure we'll make lots of money" Again, I was desparately trying not to lose it.

You have a way with words...I am now giggling at the picture you have just painted.
When I used to go to Council meetings, I sat next to a councillor just like that (male, I hasten to add) and there was a female councillor on the otherside of the table..I'd look at her, she'd look at me and we both went off in a fit of giggles with the male councillor snoring peacefully on!
So much for the democratic process

Allan, Sounds like you and I have a similar sense of humour, I have the capacity to "lose it" at the most inappropriate times, my daughter is similarly afflicted.
Berona, I could never in a million years imagine you as Dame Edna, and yes, I do know she/he is a man. Barrie Humphreys I think, used to come on tv here as the Australian Attache of Culture at one time. He seems to have dropped that now, probably at the request of the Australian people I shouldn't wonder

Tec, under normal circumstances I can only take myself, and anyone else serious for about ten minutes, after that my evil twin takes over and I just can't help myself trying to find a touch of humour in most circumstances!

I'm giggling at the picture you've put in my head of the dear old lady, Tec. My "nuisance" committee member has a habit of butting in when someone is speaking. I'm fairly quiet spoken (yes I know what you're all thinking) but this particular meeting she was meeting her husband for lunch afterwards and wanted to hurry it along. She kept interrupting and announcing the next item on the agenda. I became so annoyed with her that I asked her to stop interrupting and she told me that if she didn't keep it moving I certainly wasn't going to speak up. She was very rude and I banged my hand on the table (it hurt) and said I would not allow her to speak to me like that or to any other committee member. She immediately burst into tears and made me feel so bad but she didn't interrupt again - well not at that meeting:-))

Allan, I just find humanity hysterical generally, it must be my warped sense of humour. Some things just trigger my manic side - A women in a hat.....any women....any hat.....Why? The sight of a bride coming up the aisle.....Why? Officials with a jobsworth face........ Vicars and Bishops looking pious?
I could go on.....maybe I'm maladjusted

I haven't been involved for near to twenty years now, but I am one of five executive members of our Owners' Corporation here in our villa and townhouse complex (14 residences).
At the AGM, a vote gave us authority to handle everything without having to call a meeting and as we are all available by email, our Strata manager only has to email all of us to ask for direction, and we each answer, sending a copy to the other four....the majority rules.
This seemed a good idea, with each of us able to send one email to all the others with our thoughts before finally answering the manager. However, we have one member who never answers or acknowledges any emails and another who is a 'smart****'. (a word I don't normally use). This young man offers to "have a word" to an offending resident - but his idea of a 'word' is to say 'G'day'. He also delayed having noisy drain covers repaired while he 'has a look at them' . This he did by looking at them as he drove past them! but successfully delayed the job for another month. He works in a bank! I am ready for that one next time and will be asking him for his qualifications.

Sue, You must maintain your composure at committee, hitting tables is not good - hitting the members is even worse, however provoked.
Well my friends, I must go to bed, so, enjoy you day Aussies, and have a good night poms,
Good night everyone
