What kind of wild life is in your area - and I don't mean the people at No 26,

I give all my outside pot plants, shrubs etc, a top mulch of chicken poo pellets every Spring - works wonders.

Tec, the usual Aussie fare: Kangaroos aplenty, parrots, cockatoos, some very colourful spiders, particularly the Christmas spider which is yellow and black, the redback spider, lizards, snakes, foxes, rabbits; no koalas however!

We did have a possum visit one night...gave us a hell of a fright: a scrabbling sound on the fly screen and when we opened the blind we could just see this startled face. I managed to get a couple of phots before it disappeared



And no duck billed platypusses either, nor wombats

Tec, when does BST end?

Tec, we have wallabies - rarely seen - in the bush over the back from us. We have cockatoos, crimson rosellas, lorikeets and galahs. We also have fox which is very annoying. We also have echidnas and the odd snake has made it's way into the garden. All OH has to do is start the lawn mower and the snake heads back to the bush. We have lovely lizards that we're happy to have in the garden because they eat the nasties.

That's an interesting collection. Like the story of the possum, can imagine that would scare you in the night.
Makes our wild life sound very tame - we get foxes, rabbits, squirrels, deer, mountain goats, occassionally dolphins in the bay, and seals on the beach. And some of my neighbours are a bit wild too.

Tec, we have deer that wander into the suburbs just below the mountian range. They cause no end of destruction in gardens and to the bushland. What they don't eat they trample down. At one time a couple of deer actually wandered into the street of one town.

I am so evious of your Australian birdlife, I think you have some of the most beautiful birds in the world.
I once spent a weekend at the home of an Australian actress in Melbourne, she had a magnificent garden, but I was so impressed by the birds in that garden in the early morning - some of them were very noisy.

We have a major tourist spot in Bunbury dedicated to them

The black cockatoos are very noisy - they screech as they fly overhead. I love hearing the magpies early in the morning.

I can't be out-done here. Even though I refer to my area as a 'concrete jungle', not far from the north/south freeway and the Great Western Highway and western freeway - but we do have the grey and pink galahs which live near a canal and my cat came in last year with what looked like a bright green fan sticking out of her mouth! She was proudly yowling at me to notice it - she had even got it through the cat-flap in the door! A beautiful Lorikeet! I got her to drop it and it flew into my bedroom and perched on my bed. I then opened the front doors wide and came back to chase both of them (in different directions!) and it flew out the door and away! Haven't seen any lorikeets around here since then. I think it must have warned it's friends!
Otherwise, we don't see much wildlife around here. Magpies and Crows when bad weather is looming, but the best we can do is tiny 'skinks' in the garden. The cat has been reduced to catching those these days. They drop their tail and get away from her every time!

The galah's are beautiful aren't they - you can buy a home bred one here as a pet for around £2,000 or $4,000 - quite an expensive pet!

Hello all,
Allan! Nearly had to rush to the toot at the fate of your late platypus.
Stay beatiful..... I don't remember that one, but it was so true to the character Effie in Acropolis Now. A very clever show. I thought she was the most believable character in that program.
Sue M, I make today the 19th our time, so happy birthday (again). Yes, the grevillias are not quite out yet here, but I think they will be beautiful and would send you some, even stolen, if I could through the net.
My father would have been 85 on Thursday and his sister 89 on Wednesday. He died many years ago, and while I am now about 7 years older than what he was when he died I cannot imagine what he would look like at 85. His oldest sister is still alive almost 92 but while still in her own home is quite in a bad way- her daughter has become her carer. She is 1000 km away so I haven't seen her for too long. Never knew her really, due to a family breakdown (she went with her father, dad at age 8 stayed with his mother).
Haven't seen Persephone on this thread for a while, perhaps we scared her off. She has been on other threads so is still active. It was nice to have a k1w1 for a while, and no sheep jokes.
It's a fine sunny day here, so will get out there as I have errands. For those in gloomier parts of the world, Sydney does get about 4 feet of rain in normal years, which is nearly twice what Melbourne or London get. When it does rain it really comes down and we get very wet if unprepared.
But it is not raining today.

The "Peach Melba" was named after her. She was Dame Nellie Melba and she sang Opera. At least, I think it was opera. As I said, it was before my time!

Edit: Melba wasn't her real name. She took it from 'Melbourne'.
