Linda, Sue I leave the gardening to my OH these days but even without digging up the lawn she manages to produce siverbeet, turnips, beetroot, chillies, tomatoes, french beans and peas. We also have the mandatory lemon tree and a very productive grapefruit bush

Sue, regarding bush fires, in WA the Department of Environment and Conservation carry out controlled burns each year which are supposed to reduce the risk of a major bushfire.

These will soon be cut back because the residents of Perth object to the smoke haze!

We do not seem to have the devastating fires that occur in the Eastern States, although it is only a matter of time before a major fire comes through

Good night, Linda - sleep well.

Tec - we have a couple of rescue helicopters one of which is a childrens' helicopter called CareFlight for children being transported to the large children's hospital in Sydney. Generally for premature babies and babies in distress. My daughter's little son was flown up to Sydney when he was a few weeks old as he had a problem with his stomach and he was going downhill very quickly. I supported this helicopter before but even more so now as I believe they probably saved my grandson's life. The other helicopter has been the focus of an ongoing fight between the community and politicians. All red tape but we have been successful in retaining it in the area. The helicopters land on the roof of our local hospital and although children are very excited when it comes in most adults know it can mean a big road accident or someone in distress and especially when it's the CareFlight.

Good night Linda........Sleep well.

Good Morning Allan,
I would love to grow lemons in my garden to go in my GnT, strangely, I'm not allowed to eat grapefruit, or drink anything grapefruit related, as it is dangerous with some of the medication I'm on. I find that very odd.

The staffing arrangements are progressing slowly, now that I have quelled the rebellion from the bolshy females last night.
Honestly, they're never satified are they?

That's good Sue that there is a special helicopter for the children. The nearest childrens hospital here is at Liverpool, about 100 miles away. It would take hours by ambulance, so the chopper is essential.
We see the Air Ambulance go over about three times a week, and it always means some poor soul is in dire trouble.

Good evenig Tec,

We must be on the same medication, big warning labels on the pack about grapefruit juice!

In WA we have the Air Ambulance which is an arm of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Many mornings whilst I am walking I see the planes either arriving or landing and you know that some poor so and so is in a crtical condition and about to be transferred to Perth.

I have also been on the receiving end of the RFDS, a fantastic organisation!

Although I wasn't part of the female uprising I was in total sympathy with the ladies. I think you are too demanding Mr Tec if I can be so bold. You need to remember that in this day and age we workers have rights also:-) I can see that I may have to campaign for better working conditions.

Allan, we also have controlled burning here but sometimes it's a matter of timing. When we suddenly get hot weather and the bush is as dry as it is now it takes very little for a fire to start and once it does it's terrifying how fast it can spread. We have a lot of bushland behind us and I often feel that it's a matter of time before it causes a problem for our houses. Only once in 30 odd years has a fire come close and the men were on guard with water hoses. School holidays are a worry as some children just don't see the danger in wandering around the bushland and starting fires.

Is the RFDS funded by charities? or is it government funded?
just wondered
Tec.

Allan

Allan Report 13 Sep 2009 23:21

Tec, funded by both, but, as is usual, subject to government cutbacks!

Sue, whilst children are unaware of the havoc that can be caused by bushfires what really p*sses me of is the number of volunteer bush firefighters who deliberately spark them....they should be strung up!

Tec,

As for the bolshy ladies, don't forget that I have a foot in each camp...or is that a camp foot in each....

In these days of women's lib one has to be so careful!!

Sue,
Many ladies would happily work for me for nothing - my magnetic charm, poisonallity, good looks etc etc etc would be reward enough.

Berona Report 13 Sep 2009 23:29

Watch it, you boys! Sue's back-up has arrived!! although I don't think she needs me - she can manage you quite well on her own. I'm just here if she wants me.

I used to see the helicopter arriving and leaving Westmead hospital. It seemed to be on the move continuously. I had a view of it from my OH's ward and found myself saying a silent prayer for the patient, each time I saw it.

The Rural Fire Service is back-burning all year round in readiness for the summer bushfires, but the country is so big, there is always some parts of it that they haven't yet been able to get to. The weather has to be just right for back burning, otherwise it could do more harm than good. If it wasn't for the worry of human and wildlife, it would be good to let it burn, because aas Sue said, the bush regenerates well after it has been ravished by fire.

You're a special case Allan, and that presents me with many problems.
Especially accommodation,

The movie "Some like it Hot" I think it was called with Jack Lemon, as a member of a female band troupe,,and him shacking up with the girls

Do you remember that movie?

Tec, I rember the title of the film, but never actually saw it.

Don't worry about my accommodation....I'll just 'camp' somewhere

I'll have no camping about the house, it's bad for my reputation,

Upon reflection, I think you can share a room with Berona, she won't put up with any shenannikins (sp)

Good morning, Berona. I remember "Some Like it Hot" - very funny movie:-)

The children's helicopter - which is used for other medical emergencies when needed - have a fund-raising bear. The bears are dressed in different outfits such as nurse, paramedic, helicopter pilot etc. I have a number of these as they are reasonably priced and of course the money goes to a good cause. The staff ring on occasion to ask you to buy a new bear but if you say no they don't make you feel bad. Awhile back I was given a certificate thanking me for my support and a newsletter letting me know where the money was spent. OH reckons I probably own the helicopter by now:-))

Hi Fiona,

Wierd isn't it. Most of my medication is for heart problems, and circulation problems - also Warfarin, maybe it's that.

No cracks about Rat Poison Allan.
