children born where father is unknown eg surname

I have a female member of the family who has had child out of wedlock, and will not disclose name of father. When I put particulars of child in the programme it is asking fror surname and when I do not put one it reverts putting the child as a sister to the female. please help with this one as I have reverted to putting John Smith as a way out.
