For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who are building their family tree on new FamilySearch, I recommend a third party programme by Ohanah Software called FamilyInsight. Last year I was privileged to beta-test the software that is now available for purchase.

Connected to the Internet, it displays a list of your records in your PAF file and in a separate window beneath it shows on the left your selected PAF RIN record and on the right what is held on new FamilySearch.

You may search simultaneously for up to 20 PAF records to be compared with new FamilySearch and then sit back and let it do all the hard work for you. You then inspect the ‘Decision needed’ or ‘Decision optional’ hits and decide if they are a ‘Match’ or ‘Not a Match’ with your PAF record and then ‘Synchronize’ the files in new FamilySearch. It is that simple!

FamilyInsight will add relatives to your new FamilySearch family tree if the person is not found in new FamilySearch and update your RIN records with information from FamilySearch. An icon of two links joined together shows when the records have been combined.

If you have previously uploaded a gedcom file to Ancestral File or Pedigree Resource File, no longer will you struggle for hours combining and uncombining duplicate ordinance work to get the correct result for your family tree.

www.ohanasoftware.com proivde a free 60 day free trail. The licence for one year costs $25 US but it is free to LDS Family History Centres.

Church Members who have registered with new FamilySearch and who do not have access to the Internet, can bring their PAF file (not the Backup file) on a flash drive to a Family History Centre, plug it into a USB port on the computer and run FamilyInsight. The information is not stored on the FH computer or on the Ohana Software computer.
