Hi All and welcome to the thread Patricia.

This Happy Bread was directed by David Lean and written by Noel Coward. Yes I've seen it a few times too, nice old fashioned film, Celia Johnson played the mum as I remember and Stanley Holloway was the dad. A good choice.

Oh yes Nicky and Edd...always keep the old vileda mop and bucket handy. And just a threat of bleach in the bog too ...always have to warn hubby there's some down the upstairs loo after he grabs the paper and his cup of tea after work.....☺

Am working a night shift tonight...so back on tomorrow night I expect. I do about 5 nights a month...mustn't over do it!!!

I read some where that Gone with the Wind was filmed in stages and the burning of Georgia there were several versions of that shot.

I have the film The Battle of the Bulge film on 2 videos and parts of it are distinctly different

Paint Your Wagon
Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood
Seen it maybe 40 times, still makes me laugh

The reaction to the breast feeding Mormon lady was the best

Hi folks,

Paint you Wagon, were you born under a wandering stat David? Hope you don't Talk to the Trees...you'll get put away!! Think Clint sang that in Paint your Wagon, but may be wrong!! Bet your voice isn't quite as deep as Lee Marvin's!

Patricia, love the old films too. All the Ealing comedies and the old dramas.

Won't be about tonight so speak tomorrow folks...have a good Saturday night.

Pam. ☺

Hi Patricia.....Brief Encounter is my VERY favourite oldie....seen it many times, I just love the way they all talk so precisely, with an almost affected voice, and the innocent times they were then, ..........in our so called premiscuous society today anything seems acceptable, but the way she wrestled with her conscience over her feelings for a man she barely knew, and had really simply just bumped in to and had lunch with, was beautifully portrayed............ the snooty woman at the station cafe, and the annoying friend who interupts their final good-bye.......all great characters...... such a wonderful film.

Yes Pam, Clint Eastwood did sing I talk to the trees...... not one of his finest moments......

The Spanish Gardener was a good film
A tight script around a father, his son and their gardener

Yes thought he did Nicky.

Wasn't Sir Michael Horden in the Spanish Gardener David and Dirk Bogarde played the gardener?

Pam. ☺

David Report 6 Jun 2009 20:58

Yes , that's the one. The child only had the one parent. There was a very nasty sort of house keeper almost set the gardener up as a thief..

I didn;t usually like Dirk Bofgarde byt he was good in this film

Burt Lancaster was an actor seldom remembered now.

Watch him in Twighlights Last Gleaming or The Train 2 excellent films

The film I always think about alongside Paint Your Wagon (yes Clint did sing 'I talk to the trees' Pam!) is Cat Ballou.

Jane Fonda at her spine-shivering best as Cat (and OMG does she still look good!). Lee Marvin in the dual role as Tim Strawn/Kid Shelleen (love the scene where he's drunk on his horse, the horse is drunk as well and they're both leaning against a wall!) and let's not forget Stubby Kaye and Nat 'King' Cole as the two 'minstrels' narrating the story to music. I haven't seen Cat Ballou for years now but I really love that film.

Morning folks,

Yes I am early aren't I as I haven't been to bed yet!!!

Ed, Stubby Kaye, haven't heard of him in years...I can see his face now. Aww, think he may longer be with us. (Can't be arsed to Google, to tired!)

I'm off to bed in a while...back later i expect.

Have a good day everyone.

Pam. ☺

Hi Pam,

Yes Stubby Kaye passed away in 1997 (I was arsed to Google it!)

Nat 'King' Cole actually died before the film was released - he passed away in February 1965 and the film came out in September of that year - he was only 45.

Morning all,

Ahh yes Johnny Depp another Gemini...like nicky and myself!! Charming and never look our age!

There's not been much on the telly full stop Ed lately!! Do you remeber a series in the eighties called "Shine on Harvey Moon", starring Kenneth Cranham and Elizabeth Spriggs, and also Maggie Steed....well borrowed my cousins DVD of the series and we've been watching that on and off...really enjoying it.

Pam.

Wow Pam - there's a blast from the past - Shine on Harvey Moon!

Watching Mad Max at the moment - got to be the best of the three films. I remember seeing it when it came out; I think it was Mel Gibson's first starring role. Also got the lovely Joanne Samuel in it as Max's wife (I used to have the hots for her when the Aussie soap 'The Young Doctors' was on in the 70s)

Heh heh,

Has to be a classic line, where Max has used his handcuffes to chain Johnny the Boy to the burning car by the ankle and says:

"The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It'd take you ten minutes to hack through it with this. Now, if you're lucky, you could hack through your ankle in five minutes."

He then drops a hacksaw next to Johnny the Boy and walks off ...

Dang - just looked the film up and it's 30 years old!
