Paul, if you know when she was born, how come you don't know parents names? Was she born in Portsmouth?

Hi Ann

George was still alive in 1830 when his son William Thomas Coombs was baptised at St James, Picadilly, London. In 1841 his wife Sarah was a single mum and I have checked Westminster and Marylebone areas for burials but cannot find any matching George Coombs there. He was a coachman. Any further ideas?

I have looked at free BMD for a death of Ann (Are you sure her name is Ann?) can't find one. Looked for Thomas marrying - loads of Thomas Pritchards. strangely there is a Thomas Augustus just to confuse matters getting married Mar 1876.

although this looks more promising. the Charles here is only 3 months but it looks like Thomas's wife Ann may have died and he has married a younger one. Not sure why Ellen then has augusta as a second name. need to check out if and when Ann died and if Thomas re-married.

Ben are you sure he didn't die before the 1841? You would need to look at parish records to check that out before 1837 though.

Susan719813 Thank you so so much for that information re Alexander Victor Gibson/Hagan it really gives me more areas to search. Would love to know why Susannah left her first husband..... the family seem to be very secretive.
Please feel free to leave details on line. You deserve a pat on the back for your work.

Hi Ann

A2A is my second home:-)

I've had some good hits from there and got wills and lots of other tit bits that I've been able to send off for...........for other ancestors, but nothing at all for Thomas Brown (RM) or Henry Finch (wasn't born but lived and died) come to that:-(

Unfortunately, I stupidly let my Ancestry subscription expire and now they've put it up £30 from what I was paying so can't afford to rejoin:-(

Ann in Glos

sorry to take sooooo long to get back to you - had a crap couple of days (but I wont bore you with the details).

Now according to this newspaper report, he joined the Royal Marines in Feb 1862 in Tower Hill. He was sent to Chatham and then Deal and after 6 months returned to Chatham.

From Chatham he served on HMS Cumberland, and then HMS Thunderbolt. Then he was selected for good behavoiur to serve on HMS Galactea which he joined on 24th January 1867. After sailing around trhe world, he eventually ended up in Portmouth in 1871 and after 9 weeks leave joined the Military Police.

With regards to where I have looked, I have to admit only via the web, I've searched every web site I can think of, looking for his name, the ships and even events that are described in the article and so far have come up empty. I honestly don't know where else I could even begin to look with the sketchy details that I have???

Maggie, do you mean the Tom Cawley born in Oldham? If so he may not be a Cawley.

Think I've found his parent's marriage & it's not until 1882.

Marriages Dec 1882 (>99%)

>>>CAWLEY Thomas Robinson Oldham 8d 1002
>>>Knott Mary Ellen Oldham 8d 1002

Still haven't found Tom but this may give you something to work on.

Hi Frances,

On your Alexander Victor Gibson/Hagan's WW1 records, it states that his Father is Alexander Hagan, and that his next of Kin is Mother, Susannah Hagan and brother William Henry Hagan
adresses unknown

He had a fresh complexion, Hazel eyes and black hair, 5ft 6 ins and church of England, grocers assistant in civy street.....also went by the name of Victor in other documents disharged 1919 67 Cowran Street, Harpamey(?) Manchester, marital status single

and a letter was sent claiming for disability in 1934..by Alexander who lived at 13 Bendall Street, openshaw Estate, Manchester, in his own fair hand....the answer.says the records are private.

There are quite a few documents

apparently he made a will in 1915

Will delete if you would rather.

Just off to look William Henry
