They all had to be in bed for visiting and only 2 to a bed , no children , no sitting on beds,

Lyndi Report 26 May 2008 00:05

Remember the beds lol - all pillow case openings facing away from the door, and all bed wheels turned to run in line with the foot of the bed.
And even the sickest of patients sitting or lying to attention as the consultant did his rounds lol The only acceptable excuse for non-compliance was rigor mortis!

Who remembers having to fold the sheets straight when they came back from the laundry to put on the shelf--just remembered Sister Innes telling me off,Ros xx

Lyndi Report 25 May 2008 23:58

Bet we could all write a book!

I remember the nelsons inhalers. I also remember the big steam kettles we used to use. I remember letting one boil dry - the huge spout hanging limp and useless. I was shaking in my shoes when I had to tell sister!!

I remember interrupting the report to ask a Dr. for tickets for a disco -did I get into trouble!!!
Also remember memorising all the patients and diagnosis and the Night Charge Nurse -a male --starting at opposite end of the ward,

The bedpan sterilizer pouring out steam and when you refilled it ---forgetting to turn off the water and it overflowing down the corridor.

Having to be very quiet on Consultants rounds ---and having the shakes if he spoke to you---which wasn't often!!

Sarabby Report 25 May 2008 22:46

Trained as Enrolled Nurse in mid 70's, worked on ICU for 10 years after qualifying, then had a break when children were small

Did return to practice course in 1997, and then got a job on Recovery unit, which is where I am today, though did a conversion course 5 years ago so am now a senior staff nurse
I love my job, though do agree with everyone about too much paperwork and not enoug time for patients.

As for memories, anyone remember nelson inhalers, collecting flowers in to keep in sluice overnight and collecting in false teeth

Charlie -couldn`t agree more . I work in a GPS and they are more concerned with ticking boxes on the computer to line their pockets than basic nursing skills, (See my other thread !!!)

I remember we washed the beds down after the patient had been discharged and put them if we could out in the grounds to air especially after a death. I also remember back rounds and washes. Putting as many bedpans on the trolley as I could so that I did not have to keep going back and praying that they did not fall. Night duty on the childrens ward and having to darn all the clothes in the cupboards. Early morning breakfast when it was the juniors job to cut the bread and butter and cook the eggs. My poor patients always got hard boiled eggs!!!!!!!! Oh happy happy days.

Hi Charlie
I am at a private hospital and a large part of our remit is orthopaedic. Are you part of the live bone donation programme ?

Me, I'm orthopaedic joint replacement - love my job but would quit tomorrow if I had a choice of something else to go to , just not the same anymore - too much pen pushing -wasting of money and too much beurocrasy!! Lists and targets are more important than the patients or the staff!!
