John Hewer the actor who played Captain Birds Eye has died.

John Hewer, who is best known for playing the seafaring character who supplied only the best fish fingers for the captain's table, died on Sunday.
He had been a resident at Brinsworth House - a retirement home for actors.

A spokesman for Birds Eye said: "We are saddened to hear the news of John Hewer's death. As Captain Birds Eye in our ads for nearly 30 years John was very much part of our family and our thoughts are now with his."

Mr Hewer, who died aged 86, also appeared in the original Broadway production of Sandy Wilson's The Boy Friend.

The character of Captain Birds Eye was initially retired by the frozen food company, but he returned only three years later.

When Mr Hewer did retire he was replaced by actor Thomas Pescod.

Last February, another Brinsworth House resident, Emily Perry, who played Dame Edna Everage's long-suffering sidekick Madge Allsop, died aged 100.
