ANOTHER STEP FORWARD

Matthew Gadsby was just 27 years old when he collapsed and died. Tests showed that the married dad of one had an undetected heart condition which caused his sudden death.

This week the British Heart Foundation together with Department for Health has announced the launch of a new service and helpline which offers vital emotional support for families and promotes the need for relatives to be screened.
The Genetic Information Service (GIS)will act as first point of contact for relatives offering guidance and providing contact details for other relevant support groups. It will also provide a letter for their GP supporting the need for immediate referral to the nearest specialist unit.
Ultimately CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) are calling for mandatory screening for all young people from the age of 14.
Meanwhile mobile screening sessions have started to be held in a number of locations in the Midlands - one recent screening referred 18 out of 150 people screened to hospital that is more than 10% at potential risk.
Latest figures show that 12 young people a week in this country alone die from undetected heart problems and we cant allow this to continue.

The GIS is available on 0300 456 8383 9.00am-6.00pm Monday - Friday (same charges as to normal landlines apply)
