Is Harry short for Henry?

Whilst wandering round a cemetery (as you do!) I can across the grave of my great-granduncle, Harry Hill. It was definately him, they were still living in the same house that the family had always lived in. It gave his wife as Elizabeth A Hill.

I also found in the burial registers, the death of their son Reginald. Working out when Reg was born and then searching the birth indexes, I found a possible bith with MMN Rowley.

To get to the point... I then searched for a marriage of Hill and Rowley and found Henry Hill married Lizzie A Rowley. The marriage took place about 1 mile from where they lived..

My question (at last I hear you say) is whether Henry could be Harry and Lizzie A could be Elizabeth A? Did people put shortened names on their headstones (Harry) or use shortened names when they married (Lizzie)?

I will eventually get to the archives a check the parish records but until then, do you think I have the right marriage?

Hi Stan

Father and son on this occasion didn't have the same names but uncles/cousins etc did!

I'm beginning to think the Hill family only had 4 male names - Harry, William, Thomas and George. And all the females were Ann, Margaret or Mary Ann!

It certainly causes a few headaches working out who goes with with branch!

My ex-father in law was christened Harry Ronald John James and was always known as Ron!

My grandfather was John but always called Jack.

I have several Henry/Harry combos.

And Elizabeth! Don't start me on those!

My own father had always been known to me as Jack but I would have been at least 20 before I found out he was actually John and I had never heard anyone call him that. I think he is even down as Jack on my own birth certificate.

My Dad was Henry, like his father. I was well into my teens before I knew that.
Never once did I hear or know of him being called that, except for official forms.
He was always known as Harry.
