Hi all,

I have just gone back on the Friends board via here and neededd to send a message to someone.

It told me I had to send some money to renew membership, so I did, but it only gave me 6 months membership.??

Could anyone tell me how much it should be to register on here?

Thanks,

|Dea x

I emailed genes about charging me £9.95 for 6 months, Here is the reply

I'm sorry that you've felt the need to complain.

We have recently being reviewing the price for a Genes Reunited subscription and comparing it with the pricing on other websites that offer genealogy services together with the prices for 'off the shelf' software solutions for family tree building etc. We want to continue to offer our members the best tools and value possible for their family history research so last year we completely rebuilt our family tree, offering new tree views, better printing and more space for notes and photos. We are also working on a brand new message centre for our members as well as introducing new records and new search tools into the site. To attract new people to Genes we've also decided to advertise much more. We hope that we'll attract thousands of new people to the site who will begin their family trees to provide all our members with the contacts needed for you to get more matches for your tree. Therefore we decided on £9.95 for 6 months for new members. We've taken into consideration that many of our members undertake genealogy as a project and that 6 months is a useful membership term for people.

If a member's annual membership has lapsed for more than 4 weeks, they will also be charged £9.95 for 6 months.

We believe that Genes Reunited is excellent value for money and hope that you enjoy using the site.

Best regards,

If you don't pay a registration fee, then you can't send messages to old friends.

You can still be a 'free' member, just like you can on here, but you can't contact anyone.

debbie

yes me and my mates always used to send messages excpecily when we were still at school and in a IT lesson.

i dont really use it much now but my mates do.

i just looked on my account part of it (what never use to be there) and it just has free member there but nothing else about paying or upgradeing like gr did when i first joint.

maybe some that joined befor paying was a requirement have lucky gone unnoticed and still don't pay.

FR do now charge for 6 or 12 month terms, if you want to send emails and make contact with people on there.

You can list yourself on a school, work or other site, post messages on the school board, receive messages from other people without having to pay a subscription, but you cannot send emails.

You also could not post on the Message Boards that they used to have (removed Febrauary 2007).

The subscription was instituted in at least 2004, which is when I joined.

The inability to send or reply to emails is one major reason why there is often no response to a contact email ........ and is why we used to suggest that you include a home email address whenever you do send a message through FR.
