Genealogy Chat

I have found a relly who was a Captain on the White Star Line. Have been to the Museum in Southampton, but they do not hold any records for the White Star Line, but said most of the records are in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They only have a exhibition regarding the Titanic.(he was not on this ship).

Is there anyone who could point me in the right direction where I could find any records on line. Have found details of him on Google, New York Times, but would like to find out more about him.

He was Captain Alexander Elvin S Hambleton, on many ships, but he was Captain on sister ship of Titanic, RMS Olympic. Also Lieutant in the Royal Navy, and served during WW1

He served 44 years and retired in 1923.to Golders Green.
He died in 1929, in Hendon, this I did get from Google.

Have been looking into Google to see if I can find an Obituary for him in any papers. but no luck so far.

Although not a close relly, his story has intrigued me.

Couldn't find much, just a small item in the Times from 1920 when he diverted his ship to pick up a sick Captain from another ship.

He is listed as Commander of the vessel Baltic which arrived in New York Harbour from Liverpool on Aug 27th 1920. He is described as being British, 58 yrs of age and 5ft-6in tall.
If you go to the Ellis Island Foundation site,(It is a free site) you will find him shown on various passenger lists.
Also contach Southampton Library. They have records of british seamen there. They have supplied me with copies of records including pictures of a number of rellies who were at sea.

Matt - regarding Southampton Library, I went there yesterday, and would appear all records are now in the Basement , Archives Dept. they are only open 12.30pm to 4pm Tuesdays, and 10 am to 4pm Wednesday and Thursday.

So if you or anyone else wants records of Seaman in Southampton, this is where to go.

You go into Civic Centre main entrance, and the Dept is on the left.

Just posted this, in case anyone goes to Library and are disappointed, especially if they are coming on a journey.
