Thank you Lew for your response.

I really can't make any sense of this problem because I have birth certs. for both Charles and Charlotte and neither give the info. I need. They are as follows:
Charles Kernick 1856 - no fathers name (indicating mother unmarried) but mother listed as Charlotte Parsons formerly Kernick.
Charlotte 1860 - no fathers name - mother Charlotte Parsons.
I also have the marriage cert. for Charles but he is now Charles William (but who could blame him for losing the name Kernick) on this cert. his father is named as John Parsons.
To confuse the issue even more I have found a William John 1848 - no fathers name - mother Charlotte Eliza Kernick.

On Charles marriage cert. the witnesses are William Parsons and Charlotte Parsons.

I just can't work it out and was hoping to find the birth for Joseph in the hope that cert. might help.

Any ideas?????

Linda, there is only one Joseph Parsons with mother Charlotte in the 1851 census, but it's not your one. For reference here is the 1861 census. What I'm wondering, as there is such a big difference between Joseph 13 and his brother Charles 5, could Charlotte have been married before, or even had Joseph out of wedlock
