Hi Everyone

Thanks for all your input. I have found Charles mothr Sarah being buried in Whittlesford in 1797 which is the parish that Charles settled in. I think that the father died prior to the birth of the baby..and that is interesting about maybe Thriplow being Sarah's parish. Could well be but at the moment cant find her marriage in Thriplow or Whittlesford so dont know her maiden name. I am waiting for the helford PR's to come as i think that is where the Nunns originated so will see what that says. Hoping that is where the babys father is buried coz it was'nt in Thriplow or Whittlesford. Can't wait for the examination fiche to arrive and see what that throws up. I do have to sa Cambridge FHS ar very good and have loads of stuff.

Brief expanation from the A2A Glossary...

'Settlement: the Poor Law required the authorities of a parish to be responsible for the maintenance of poor people settled there. Settlement certificates were issued to those who moved to another parish. If the need for maintenance arose, the authorities could make a removal order to send them and their dependents back to their parish of origin, after carrying out an examination (or interrogation) as to their settlement. Settlement certificates, removal orders and settlement examinations may be found in the archives of Quarter Sessions courts and of parishes.'

Sorry for the distraction, Cathy, but could someone tell me what a "settlement certificate" is?

Yes, the first baby was often born at the maternal grans home.When you think how hazardous child birth was - no doubt the poor girls wanted to have mum with them, particularly the first time.

Maybe Sarah was originally from Thriplow and went home to have her baby - many did then.

Good luck - the truth is out there! LOL. I always remember being told "if you cant find it you arent looking in the right place" hmmmm!

Thanks Heather have just been on Cambridge FHS and thy have microfiche of examination papers including poor law, settlement etc so have ordered it.

Dont know about Cambridge Cathy, you could have a google, I believe Cambridge FHS are supposed to be very active. When I was looking for a settlement cert I emailed Norfolk RO with the names and almost immediately back came an email giving me the information! I think they charged me a couple of quid to photocopy it and send it to me. It was quite helpful as it placed my GGPx4 in 1760 without any kids which gave me a pointer
of their marriage date.

Thanks Heather. I have just ordered a couple more parish registers to see if i can find the parents and the parish. I know Charles born 1753 ended up in Whittlesford as i have those PR's etc. The mother Sarah didnt seem to stay in Thriplow as there is no remarriage for her or burial and there is a possible burial for her in Whittlesford in 1797, so maybe she went there with her son. Will there be anything online for settlement certificates or will i have to get in touch with Cambridge RO

Well it does mean after the death so I would think Charles probably died prior to his birth. Possibly you need to search for a settlement certificate for the Nunns?

Hi can anyone help me with this query. I have the parish registers on microfiche for Thriplow Cambridge and i have the the following:
1753 19 August Nunn Charles posthumous son of Charles and Sarah

What does this mean as i cannot find a burial for either Charles or the mother Sarah. I think they have come from another parish as they are about the only Nunns mentioned.
