If you copy the files first then you can still merge them together and have the separate file as well.

Another option is called "splitting files", that allows you to take certain names from your tree and put them on a separate file (sort of merging in reverse!!).

The most important thing though is to backup your files to disc/stick before you merge/split anything.

Thanks Glen, will have a look at that, although I still would like two separate trees with certain information on, perhaps it is a bad idea. Will have a read first.

Had a read of it and it looks like it can be done, just got to find the courage to do it, thanks again Glen.

You can merge the two separate files (trees) together to make one file (tree).

It would have all the names from both trees, all the images, notes, photographs etc.

If you go to the help centre it explains the process better than i can here, the most important thing to do first of all is to backup the files you want to merge, just in case things don't go quite right you can then revert to the files in their original state.

Please can anyone tell me how I merge two family trees on Family Tree Maker, I have a tree with everyone on related to me and one with just grandparents and their children i.e. aunties and uncles.

I keep most up to date with the grandparents one but am altering it so that I enter the marriages of the children as well, (nothing else).

Is there an easier way as I find more grandparents that I could merge the two trees or do I have to add to each tree seperately if you know what I mean. I dont want the two trees to end up the same but one with everyone on and one with just grandparents, children and who they married.

Hope this makes sense, any help would be greatly appreciated before I make a complete mess of things, I am scared to do anything merging wise until I am completely sure.
