I can only echo what others have said. Do it by letter not phone. The other person could be shocked, flabberghasted, might slam down the phone then regret it. You don't know if he is in the company of someone and can't speak openly. Please go the letter route.

I'd go for a letter every time. A phone call out of the blue could be a bit of a shock, or come at an inopportune moment when you are busy. You could also forget what was said if the call has been a bit of a surprise.

As already stated, write a letter and add your phone number and email address.

Hi,
You can put a phone down and then what next?. You can put a letter down but always pick it back up later. Add your phone number to the letter.
I'd go for a letter.

have you tried 192!! he may be listed but then again he may be ex dir. .

My own thought is even if you get a phone number you would probably still be tongue tied if you rang it. I really would try the letter route first. You dont have to go into past details in it Just introduce youself and ask if he knew your mum and if so did he know about you. You would like to speak with him if he was willing and leave it at that, Who knows he may have been waiting for you to make contact.

May be a silly question but have you tried the phone book or directory enquiries?

Directory Enquiries are free online here - http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/search/residential/search.publisha

If he is ex-directory you won't find it though.
