Hi Llamedos: Yes I understand what you are saying and I have applied for certs. for other family members. On this particular person I didn't really have a lot to go on. I thought if I could find him on a later census it would help me to find out more about him. The Army records give a lot of info. so I can see why he wouldn't be on the census in the place he should have been. Anyway I am a lot further on than I was. Thanks all, for your help. Regards Shiela

HI sheila,
Seems you give more information with every message - much 'passed down through the family'
Read my first message, and start a 'proven' family tree - starting with youself, and working backwards in time.....get evidence by ordering certificates to back up your research.
Hope you don't think I'm being critical - only trying to get you on the right road.

Thanks for your input. I Know that Alex. Wilson is a relative. This has been talked about in our family for years. Alex. was the son of Mary and Alex. Wilson, she later became the wife? of James Robertson and had children by him. Alex. is shown in some of the census with the Robertson family. He even used the Robertson name at times. I looked on Ancestry Jim and I am sure that this is my Alex. Wilson, but will do a further checkup. The marriage info. on the Army papers shows that Janette Young was a witness to the marriage of Alex. and Janette and the Young's are also in our family tree. Many thanks to everyone for your help. Regards Shiela

Hi Sheila,
Fantastic you have a family bible, and a 90 year old uncle. However,,with the greatest respect to his great age some of the facts will have altered in time - also family bibles are only a record of what that person wrote at that time.
Reading your replies, it seems as though you are 'jumping' from one bit of info - to another without any proof of line - this can be very upsetting if you latch one to another family - thinking its yours.
So, my advice is start with the known facts - you have a birth certificate - it will record your father and mother's maiden name - trace and obtain their marriage to find their fathers, and so on backwards in time - ancestry. co.uk is ideal for this research......this way you will have a 'proven' family tree.
I have had a look for you, but cannot find Alexander in the censuses with the info to hand.
However, I have found a marriage entry for a ROBERT LUMSDEN who may have married a HARRIET WILSON at Glendale [10b.650] Northumberland. Sep quarter 1985.....hope this helps.

Wow, thanks very much Jim. It sure sounds like him. His mother was Mary and she left her husband for James Robertson and had further children with him. Actually on one of the census they show him as Alex. Robertson. Sorry, can you tell me what site do I go on for the above record. Again, thanks very much, more info. for my tree. Regards Shiela

Hi: Alexander Wilson's birth is from a family bible. The rest of the info. is from my uncle who is going to be 90 this year. I got this info. from him a few years ago. Alexander is a half-granduncle to me. My uncle obviously doesn't remember too much now. I tried to find info. in the census and tried to find the marriage of Agnes and also Alexander. My uncle is the last living relative of that generation that I know of. He doesn't remember who Alex. married. That would have been helpful. I have been looking on Ancestry. I have info. on Alex. in the early years (census). Shiela

Thinking out loud..........
If you don't know when Agnes/Nancy was born, you obviously don't have her birth cert
If you can't find Alexander except on 1881 census, how do you know which Alexander Wilson fathered her?
What is the source of your info? Where have you looked in your search for Agnes's marriage? How do you know who she married?
Just trying to get things clarified................

Hi Reg. I don't know when she married. I know Alexander lived in Barleydean, Carrington - Registration district, Midlothians, on the 1881 census with the Robertson family. he is not with them in the 1891 Census. Shiela

Hi I am trying to find census info. on Alexander Wilson. Born Oct. 4, 1862 in Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland. I have tried to find him in the 1881,91, 1901 census but no luck. I know he had a daughter Agnes/Nancy. She married a Robert Lumsden can't find her in the 1901 census either. I presume she would have been born around 1882 as her father would have been about 20 yrs. old. They both probably lived around the Edinborough area. Nancy/Agnes at some point lived in the Portobello area. I Hope someone can find both of them on a Census. I don't have his wife's name. Thanks for any help you can give. Regards Shiela
