It means an error on the certificate has been corrected, probably the middle initial added by mistake. The registrar keep a list of corrections, this would have been the 22nd on the list.

I have a marriage certificate for the Twenty Fifth June 1872. The bride's middle initial is either illegible or has been crossed out and what looks like 22 has been written above. Also, on the left hand side of the certificate, the words 'Twenty Two' have been written followed by the registrar's initials.

Does anyone have any idea what this could mean?

Thanks,

Clare
