Can anyone suggest a website I might find a basic history of where and when regiments served during WW1?

I've been googling furiously, and can't find what I am looking for.

Which is:-

I have the fact that a relative was in the Royal Garrison Artillery and served until 29/11/1919 when I have his cert of tfr to reserve on demobilisation. But I have also a commemorative shell case engraved with the words "Tortona Peace Salute 29/06/1919" which leads me to think he was probably there. I am therefore looking for evidence that the RGA were at Tortona in June 1919.

Can anyone suggest where I might find this?

There is a site caled something like my grandad was in the war. Not sure if it will be of any help to you.

Thanks for the suggestions, Carole, I can't find the site you are referring to, but I think I need a more specific military site.

Colin and Tiddly(!) I have looked on 1914-1918 but to no avail. I am wondering if perhaps Tortona was a very small barracks area that some of the troops were maintained in after armistice as I can't find much reference to it at all, and the salute took place the day after the treaty of Versailles was signed so I wonder again if it was just a localised acknowledgement of the peace and not newsworthy at the time, or now.

Any other ideas welcomed.

I've found the forum on 1914-1918 now... and registered but can't post on the boards yet... maybe I have to wait to be "allowed to!" ... does anyone else use this board?

Hi SH..

I found that there is a delay between being able to post and having registered, anyway I am up and running, and posting now!

I have his medal card, and demob cert, but no brigade is mentionned, just RGA, which is frustrating!

hopefully someone on the forum there will be able to interpret his reg no for me..

and Colin is looking into the Tortona bit for me too..
