I am feeling totally defeated by all this, my brain has turned to mush, i can't think straight anymore. a couple of days ago some fabulous members helped me to get the census records for the williams family in battle.

I was told by my grandfather that his mother was one of 15 surviving children, so far i have 13 of them, mostly born in mountfield sussex ( 3 miles from Battle) I know that both their parents had died before 1918, have found mothers death in 1912 aged 50. Cannot find fathers death anywhere. his name was George W Williams according to census born 1862 in Lambeth. I can't find a birth either some in other years but not 62.

Also found three of the childrens marriages in Battle. Robert,Adelaide and Jane, but can find no others at all.

now this is difficult to explain and sounds silly. my grandfather's Mother was a williams. my grandmother's mother was a holloway. i have found a holloway and a williams marrying in battle in 1915. although i have neither 1st names in my tree i want to see if they are connected to my family.

i wondered if somebody might try to help me regain my brain power and stop going round in circles by attempting to find the missing links. George W Williams birth (c.1862 in Lambeth) and his death sometime between 1906 and 1918 possibly in battle. also any marriages of williams in Battle.

i live in hope and thanks to all the people who have helped me already. i know its a big ask and very muddled i am so desparate to sort this now. thanks. Leanne.x

:) still smiling :)

:) still smiling :) Report 21 Dec 2007 15:24

sorry yes the children are those of George W williams and his wife Jane. GR members found them on census as i don't have ancestry, do you want me to copy them from the other old thread for reference. i don't know george's parents but he was born in Lambeth.

CelticShiv

I would say you need to order the certificate of George W Williams marriage to Jane, to get the name and occupation of his father and work from there.

i think i have found an entry on freebmd for a George william williams and a jane harper. that atleast would tie in with the date of their first child's birth in 82.

Penny

Penny Report 21 Dec 2007 15:38

it is - what you really need to do is order one of the childrens birth certs too - just to check janes maiden name

nice distinctive one would be best

if you look at the 1881 census entry I pasted for a George W Williams, he is in Lambeth and he married Jane Harper in the last quarter of 1881 in Lambeth,

so it is quite likely that it is him, but the marriage certificate will confirm 100%

ok great. thank you both. yes gretchen is a fairly distictive name. thanks for all your help. 1 more question. any idea how i can find any of the childrens marriages. as its a fairly common surname and they can't all have stayed in the same place do you have any ideas how to narrow the search if all i know is their name not where their living or a spouse?

thanks agin.leanne.
