Eleanor Yes i have got May,s birth cert Aug 1895 they were still in Sculcoates then .
I also have my nan,s but she was born after the census was taken and i have Elizabeth,s death cert.
On all the cert i have including Charles death cert she used Elizabeth Mason .The 1901 census is the only time i can find her using Lizzie

Thanks for taking so much time on this .
I wasn,t hopeful but sometimes a second pair of eyes confirms you aren,t just going mad .

Hi,
Reggie i know what you mean .
This is some thing i have been trying to sort out for a few years .
Elizabeth Mason was my g.grandmother wife of Charles Smelt on 1901 census She used the name lizzie Wallsend ,Northumberland Both born Hull .
First child born 1889 Scucoates ,Hull .
No sign of them on the 1891 and the only on i can find that fits on the 1881 is an Elizabeth Masson .

Charles also used the name Stephen James

Thanks

Try giving the details on here, and see what comes up...........

Incidentally, the son only knew what his mother told him about her age...........so allow for errors.

Ages on death certificates are even worse - they are only as accurate as the person registering the death and if it was the next door neighbour (it has been known) then it could be way out.

Who is the person? Try posting her details and see if anyone on here can find her. I assume she was married when she died?

Thanks for your replys .
Just had a look at her death cert it srates her age was 68 when she died in April 1928 .
because i cant find a marraige for her i can,t find parents names .
This is why i am trying to narrow it down as much as i can

Yes for 1881. No for 1901, he would only have been 40.

Hi Cath, census ages are notorious for being incorrect, people thought they were one age and said that when asked, so yes could be quite possibly 20 on 81 and 41 on 1901.

Sam

Sam Report 13 Dec 2007 20:09

They could also have been anything from about 18-22 on the 1881 and 39-42 on the 1901!

Ages on census can quite often vary (sometimes wildly) and are very rarely dead right. Sometimes the person answering the questions may not have know the exact date someone was born, if they were uneducated they may not know their own age! Enumerators also made errors when transcribing the records.

Hi All
Can anyone work this out for me .
If some one was born in March 1861 could they have been 20 on the 1881 census and 41 on the 1901 .
If this helps the 1881 census was taken 3rd April and 1901 31st March .

Thanks

Cath
