One of my relatives emigrated to Fremantle, Perth, Australia in 1940s with her young son, she was not married, and got there by paying £10 emigrates passage fare on the ship, does anyone know how i would go about finding her details or anything about her new life in Australia, thanks Lynne.

We found living relatives in Townsville Queensland by joining the Townsville Family History Society. They helped us to obtain relevant BMD, which eventually led us to living relations. I am sure thare is a Perth Family History Society. Try a google as these FHS are so helpful.

Log into National Archives site as a guest.

You can do a general search just put in the time frame, or passenger index search which covers passengers arriving Fremantle 1926 - 1947 and going onto other ports.

Unfortunately the BMD site that Mary mentioned above will not have anything for the 1940's onwards. The NAA site mentioned by Helen may well list her immigration though so that would be a good starting point.

If you think that she may have married in WA, you could try this site: http://www.openwindows.com/marriage/search.htm . That only goes up to 1946 so far, but they are gradually adding more recent records.

You could also search the burial records at: http://www.mcb.wa.gov.au .

Hi Lynne, The 'West Australian State Library' has an 'Ask a Librarian' service (query form on-line) -they will check their records including electoral rolls for you. Valerie (WA)

All State Electoral Offices in Australia now have a public access computer. Anyone can go in and search the electoral rolls for all States and Territories.
Lynne if you pm me I will do a search for the son. However, there is a chance that if your relative married in Australia, the son may have been adopted by his step father giving him a different family surname.

I'm going to be in the area of an State Electoral Office on Thursday... so let me know before then.

You can only access the present electoral roll at the SEC office... you can check every State and Territory one at a time. You type in the name and ALL the names come up for that State. Then repeat for other States.
If you need to check for previous years the old electoral rolls are on micro fish (sp?) and can be found in every main State library in major cities.
