Civil registration records for births, marriages and deaths started for the July quarter 1837. The record of his baptism would be in parish registers. I shall nudge (bring forward) a couple of threads that I hope will help. |

you cant get certs of any sort pre sept qtr 1837 cos they didnt exist, the best you can hope for is to get a copy of the parish record ,, have a look at the Family Search site. |

Thankyou so very much to everyone who replied to me, I am really grateful. I have the marriage certificate which does give me his father's name and occupation. and I have ordered his death certificate to-day. If you don't mind me asking will I now be able to order the birth certificate with the information that I was given. By the way I paid 7 Pounds (ZAR 105). |

There is no such thing as a birth certificate for someone born in 1823 (nor for anyone else born in England/Wales prior to July 1st 1837 or Scotland prior to Jan 1st 1855) so you won't be able to order one. |

Thanks again to everyone for your help, sorry I didn 't understand that birth certificates were not available prior to 1837 but I do understand now and will look for parish records - must have been a senior moment! |
