Im trying to find the death of one of my relatives, but im not sure where to look. Is there a cut off of when you can look? also i belive he may have died/or been lost at sea.
any help would be very much appericated as the death certs are confusing me for some reason.

When? Where?

If you have a reasonable idea of when the death occurred and it was within England or Wales then the first place to check is the GRO indexes for deaths.

Some of these are available via FreeBMD but for others years it is a very long trawl through each year and quarter on Ancestry or findmypast. (both of these are fee paying)

How confident are you about the death at sea? There is a separate GRO index of "marine deaths". This is available on the subscription sites findmypast and also familyrelatives.com

John Trewhella woud have been my g.g grandfather, he was born in 1866 in cornwall, he married in 1888 in liverpool and his daugther was also born in 1888 in wales (mother was welsh). He is not in the 1891 census. John was a marine engineer and was belived to have died/lost at sea. My grandmother is adamant as thats what her mother told her (johns daughter) the people that myg.grandmother thought were her parents were actually her aunt and uncle. her real mother is in the 1891 census remarried. so we belived he must have died either 1889/90. No idea where though.

To save you checking ...

I have a subscription for Ancestry and some of the death records are fully transcribed and searchable on name. There are 21 deaths for John Trewhella's, a couple of them around the right time (1889-90), but none of these John's were born in 1866.

I have also checked 'Find my past' for deaths at sea (I also have a subscription for that site) but cannot find anything for him.

Tracing the family history costs me a fortune!

Is he the John Trewhella living with his grandparents Matthew and Grace Trewhella in 1881, and with parents Martin and Elizabeth Trewhella in 1871?

Are you sure this is the right John Trewhella? It seems surprising that someone whose father and grandfather were farmers got to be a marine engineer. There are two more John Trewhellas of about the right age on the 1881 census with strong naval connections.

Do you have his marriage certificate? What was his age, and his father's name and occupation?

Mary from what ive got i believe his grandparents are Matthew and Grace and his parents were Martin and Elizabeth,
On his birth cert his Father is Martin Trewhella occupation a Farmer and on his marriage cert his father is Martin occupation Farmer Bailiff. Johns age was 22 and his occupation was Engineer.

I was unable to find my G.G.Grandfather for a long time because he was not in the census's I found out that he was not dead he was at sea when they took the census's so there was no record for twenty years.
I found him through the birth of his children the record just say's on board a Man O War.

Emily is a boarder and says she is married so John might well be alive at this point. I believe Owen is her brother.
The family is at 10 Cornish Place just down the road from daughter, Caroline, who is at number 4 as niece to William and Caroline Evans.

Is it possible that John didn't die and that was just the story given? Did Emily actually marry someone else or just live with them?

Hi Andy that could possibly be Emily as the address is correct and Trewhella in Wales is very rare. Also for some reason she called both her daugthers Caroline but neither were known as that name.

As far as i know she remarried a Jonah Thomas although i cant find a marriage, i suppose it would have been quite easy to lie as her maiden name was Thomas. i know they had 3 children together Caroline Harriet and Robert which im sure i have in the 1901 census.

10 cornish place is deffantly my g.grandmother. I belive she did have a brother called Owen, sorry to be a nuisance but did it say how she was related to the head of the house as the other names arent ringing a bell to me. Also how did u know it was her daugther down the road or did u just put 2 and 2 together and get 4.

My Grandma told me that she was told by her mother (John and Emilys Daugther) that he was lost at sea.
