William's occupation in 1841 is Cabinet Maker which ties in with being a Joiner.

I think Angela is right about the illegitimate birth of John.

Hello Claire

I think that, as you say the name Ramsay features in future generations, it's possible that John was Jane Ramsay's illegitimate son & he was subsequently brought up by William Cogdon as his own. There is a baptism on IGI of John Ramsay, son of Jane Ramsay in Bishopwearmouth in 1827. (Although this is a submitted entry, so is not totally reliable).

The fact is, that there appears to be a large gap between John & the next child & this could explain that.

Unfortunately, if this turns out to be so, the paternal line stops here!

Hi,

I'm certain about my family up until this point, but my g.g.g.grandfather in confusing me. I know his name was John Cogdon and he had a son called Barker in 1854 ( I have Barker's marriage cert). This is the family in 1861:

1861 England Census
about Barker R Cogdon
Name: Barker R Cogdon
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1853
Relation: Son
Father's Name: John
Mother's Name: Sarah
Gender: Male
Where born: Durham, England

Civil Parish: Sunderland
Town: Sunderland
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage: View Image

Registration district: Sunderland
Sub-registration district: West Sunderland
ED, institution, or vessel: 3
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 183
Household Members: Name Age
Barker R Cogdon 8 [The R stands for Ramsey/Ramsay]
Eleanor Cogdon 3
John Cogdon 35
John Cogdon 6
Margret Cogdon 11
Sarah Cogdon 39
Sarah J Cogdon 14
Jane Kirton 26

His wife Sarah's maiden name was Kirton and I have their marriage certificate giving John's father's name as William Cogdon (he was a joiner).

I found what seems to be his family in 1841 (although obviously you can't see his relation to the head):

1841 England Census
about John Coydon
Name: John Coydon
[John Cogden]
Age: 14
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1827
Gender: Male
Where born: Durham, England

Civil Parish: Sunderland
Hundred: Sunderland Town
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation: View Image

Registration district: Sunderland
Sub-registration district: West Sunderland
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
John Coydon 14
Lune Coydon 30
Margaret Coydon 9
Robert Coydon 2
Rowland Coydon 5
Thomas Coydon 1
William Coydon 30
William Coydon 8

Lune has been corrected to Jane. I can't make out William's occupation.

I then found a marriage between a Jane RAMSEY and William Cogdon in 1831, but this is after John's birth and I have two contacts who have missed John completely, and that start with who I thought were his younger siblings (who there is a few years age gap between him and them) for William and Jane's children.

Seeing as I can' t order a birth certificate for John (as he was born in 1826/7) and he was born before the people who I think are his parent's marriage, how can I be sure that they are his parents? I've had a look on familysearch (to double check) but I don't think his birth is there.

I was pretty sure Jane was John's mother as quite a few of the decendants have the middle name Ramsey/ay. We think that John lied about his age to get married as all the censuses following his and Sarah's marriage show him as about 3 years younger than her making him 17/18 at the time of marriage when the cert says 'of full age'.

Help!

(I hope that all made sense!)
