Do you mean on the census - people have kindly given examples here. But on any site, where you are trying to find info, like google searches etc. key words are the words that are the most important in the search.

Say you are looking up the Johnson family from Bath and you know Abraham Johnson was a mayor in Bath sometime in the late 19th century?

The key words there would be his name, the place and his occupation?position and the time period.

So if I were googling for info Id put in key words such as

Mayor Abraham Johnson Bath

or
Johnson genealogy Bath

that sort of thing

Other keywords could be names that dont appear with a family, they could be "inmates" "soldier" "visitor" "lodger" or if you know they were in an Asylum or "vessels"

Keywords on the census are very useful. If you're looking for someone you know born/died in a particular registration district or town, but don't know exactly where. Type the place into the box & it'll cover the whole area.
