Hi all, Does anyone know how you can find out which registeration district a road is in on the 1901 cenus.?

The area I`m asking about is Sculcoates, Hull in Yorkshire.

I have a marriage in November 1901 in the Parish of Sculcoates, both bride and groom give their address as 14 Cromwell Street, this is not where either of them lived, both were in London on 1901 census, and returned to London after their marriage,so I am trying to find out who they were staying with at the time of marriage. I have tried searches in both bride and grooms surnames but have not bought up Cromwell Road. I have found one of the witnesss living in Sculcoates ,but a different address,
Has anyone any ideas?

Have you tried an address search on the 1881 census? I know there were name changes to roads (esp in London), but there still seems to be a reasonable strike rate from the census returns to today's Multimap.

Ivy, no I hav`nt tried the 1881, I didn`t think address search without a surname was very successful on that, at least I havn`t had any luck previously.

Currently there is a Cornwall Street in Hull; and a Cromwell Road in Hedon.

Hedon is a sub-registration district of Sculcoates registration district for 1881.

Do an address search in 1901 on National Archives - you would need credits to view the result - but at least you would know which area it is in as this would show for free

Well just tried it and typically can not find the right CP and then EP to match the results

I think you're right about address search not working very well without a name. Had to go back to square 1:

Postcodes and detailed look at multimap showed that the Patrington and Hedon ones looked like modern developments; but Cromwell Close off the Beverley Road in Hull is quite close to Sculcoates parish (sorry Nicky, had missed that - I'm used to Sculcoates being the district name)

Turned to Ancestry 1881. Put Walker into the person search and used Sculcoates as the key word; 250 results; put in Cro* into street address - zero results; took off Walker and got 250 results.

Used preview button on the names, and struck lucky on the second one (Allgrisman at 20 Cromwell Street). The reference is Class: RG11; Piece: 4759; Folio: 7; Page: 8; Line: ; GSU roll: 1342150.

The previous page has the people at 12 Cromwell Street - Elizabeth Newton, widowed with two children: Class: RG11; Piece: 4759; Folio: 7; Page: 7; Line: ; GSU roll: 1342150.

Will try for that name on 1901, but it is unlikely 20 years on.

West Sculcoates in 1901 has 41 enumeration districts, if you include the industrial school and the workhouse - district 1 (per 1881 census) does not look as if it is the same area in 1901.

Actually, on closer inspection it is not bad. They are both Spring Bank, but that looks like a long road, spanning several EDs. West Sculcoates starts at RG13/4491 folio 5. The industrial school starts at RG13/4496 folio 30. Perhaps try the surname you're looking for with the six piece numbers 4491 to 4496?

Ivy, I will search from the Allgrisman name and work through the pages to see if I can find house number 14, and if no luck , try through the WEst Sculcoates numbers 4491-4496 as you suggested.

Its a real mystery this one as to why they went to Sculcoates to marry, I`m hoping if I can find the householder at 14 Cromwell Street it may unearth a relative I prehaps didn`t know about.

Found it!!

It comes under District 5 of West Sculcoates ED.
No 14 Cromwell St is on Page 12 of 35.
(RG13; Piece: 4491; Folio: 101; Page: 12)

My first guess at the name is Elizabeth Mingay (Ancestry transcibes as Midgay), a 60 y-o Lodging House Keeper, along with her son Robert (19) and two lodgers John Fawcett (25) and Fred Barker (46).
As you didn't say what surnames you were looking for, I don't know if this helps. It could just be that they were lodging there, maybe they eloped.

Your a star!!, thank you so much, the names I`m looking for are SPINK and TALBOT, so Mingay dosn`t ring a bell ,but you never know may make a connection later on.

This place sounds like a boarding house so they could have just chosen it, if they did elope it would explain the short time spent in Sculcoates.

Family lore says that the groom Spink married beneath himself, and his brothers never felt she was good enough for him, her father was a coachman , his family all worked in the Bank of England, that may explain the witnesss to the marriage,the brides mother and what looks like a work colleague of the groom, maybe none of his family attended . Anyway Rob thanks for helping unravel part of the mystery.
