Hi Caron

Ancestry is by far the superior website as it has so much more data that you can search through.

It does take some getting used to though, but the more you use it..... the more you will find that it is very useful and user friendly.

Just take your time to have a look at all that might be of some use to you now and as time goes on you might feel the need browse through other things.

Searching for ancestors on other peoples trees is a bit of a nightmare though as it's data is so vast but I have found loads of connections to my relatives and ancestors on there, living in the USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland and of course over here in England.

As for Hot Matches on GR! Waste of time I find. So many same names but born in different Continent, Countries yet alone counties!

I have just renewed my membership on GR and will continue to use it. Why?

The members on here are friendly and great at helping others..........you don't get that sort of commitment on Ancestry.

No doubt as time goes on, you will find yourself subscribing to both Ancestry & GR..... and having a family tree programme on you own PC, just like so many of us.

My tree on here is only used to find 'Hot Matches'.

If I opened my tree....You would find my Grandmother, born 1889 is the mother to everyone listed from 1907 back to 1770...lol

I have been using Ancestry for about 4 years now and I wouldn't be without my subscription.

However I do not have my tree on there. I have a small part of my tree on Genes from when I first joined more than 4 years ago, but I hardly ever update it as I find it easier to keep my tree on my FTM2005 software.

I still get matches and I can still search for my lot's names on Ancestry. I use it mainly for searching the census and BMD's although there is loads more on it and I'm sure you will get used to it if you play around with it. I wouldn't use credits on GR as they are too expensive.

Started my research on GR and built up my tree, however spent a fortune in credits so decided to join Ancestry for annual fee so cheaper to do searches, however finding it not very user friendly, probably only because I'm used to this site but someone told me who's been researching their tree for 20 years that Ancestry is the main site that people use. I've loaded up my tree but find I still use my GR tree more and just use Ancestry for searching, any thoughts...will I be cutting my chances of getting a link with someone elses tree...and any idea why no hot matches have come through for ages....
