I am not sure what to do, yesterday, I subscribed to the Rootsweb Nottinghamshire mailing list. I then sent an email to the list introducing myself, who and where my interests were, which is BULLARD and BARRATT familes from Newark. I listed William BULLARD b1811 in Newark, amongst others, and said I would love to hear from anyone with the same interest.
I have had an email back from another subscriber, giving me the name of who she thinks are the parents of William BULLOCK and the dates of their marriage.
This is a fairly new branch of my research and do not know if the name BULLARD is a derivitive of BULLOCK or has she just made a mistake, how do I apporach this, any ideas, as I dont want to be rude or ever make myself look silly on a new mailing list ( I would rather leave that a while )

Couldn't you say something alone the lines of..You wonder if she had accidentally misread the surname you had put up ..etc

Would you think that it is a derivitive, I am not thinking it is likely

Normally i look on the IGI as it gives you alternate spellings and for BULLARD thats all that coming up.

Id just reply saying many thanks for kindly contacting me, however my chap is xxxxxxxxxxxxx and I have never come across a varariation of that name as xxxxxxxxxxx

I hadnt thought of looking on the IGI, but that was a good idea, I think if it were a "variation" it would have come up there.

Thanks all so much for your advise, in the meantime I have pm'd someone on this site who has BULLARDS in her/his tree to see if they have had the same name come up. ( they dont have my William unfortunately)

Still no response from the person on this site, who has BULLARDS in their tree.

But I did as Kulie suggested and added I hadnt thought that BULLOCK could be a deriviative of BULLARD, she emailed back saying sorry she must have been having a senior moment and meant to type BULLARD
So all is well, I have my answer

I work with a Bullard whose family came originally from Lincoln. Happy to interrogate him if that would be of interest to you!

Unless of course Bullard and Bilyard are connected in which case we need to talk!

I do know they were mrried in St Mary's Church.
Can you tell me is Newark on Trent a different place to Newark
