can any kind soul explain gedcom to me and how it could be used on genes

GEDCOM is just the file format that family tree files are saved in.

If you have your tree here on Genes and export it, it will be emailed to you as an attachment in GEDCOM format.

Or, if you have family tree maker or something else on your PC and want to transfer the data from there to this site, you will create a GEDCOM file to import to Genes.
