Minnie - nickname for what?

I've been looking for a James Garside, born around 1885 in Hull.

In the 1901 census the mother is called Emma Wood, married to James Wood and James Garside is noted as stepson (to the Head of the household), along with his younger brother Thomas.

Ten years earlier, the 1891 census lists both James and Thomas with a mother called Minnie Garside, a widow. All this seems to fit - except the fact that Minnie has turned into an Emma (assuming it IS the same family, of course!)

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Thanks, Mhairi. It says Wilhelmina too.

Definitely not Emma!

I had a Minne who turned out to be an Ellen - I think it was simply a pet name because her mum was also Ellen.

But is there a chance this Emma can be a new wife?

In the 1901 census, the Garside boys are listed as stepsons to James Woods. I suppose James Woods could have been married to Minnie Garside, and if she died / left them, he could have continued to look after the boys, with a new wife called Emma in tow.

It all seems a bit unlikely, however! I don't know - this has stumped me. I guess I'll just have to order James's birth certificate and see who the parents are from that.

Thanks for all your help so far, guys.

Regards, Ellie

Have you managed to find a Marriage Registration for James Wood?

The 2 census you have them in - have you checked the original? I have found that both Emma and Minnie often get mistranscribed and even enumerated.

Thanks everyone - especially Andy. There's quite a bit of info there!

Spot on with the area and Mottram isn't a particularly common name, is it?

I have ordered James's birth certificate and will see what names are listed for his parents and will go from there.

Many, many thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread.

Received James's birth certificate today and his parents are definitely Mottram Garside and Minnie, formerly Allitt - so thank you Andy.

I'll be able to go back through the earlier censes to find out more about them, but still stumped on the Emma bit!
