The marriage cert may give you her age at the time, so you will have some idea of when to search for her birth registration.

Also, when you have her birth date it will help in narrowing down the search for her death. The death cert might help find the institution if she stay there until she died.

Tracey,

He would not have had to divorce her in order to remarry if she had died. There must have been some other reason why he couldn't divorce her. Have you tried googling Divorce Laws?

Potty

Potty Report 19 Oct 2007 17:56

Found this - could explain why the divorce took so long:

Nevertheless as divorce continued to rise the results of the Gorell commission of 1909-12 were finally put into practice as the Herbert Act of 1937 was passed. This act extended the grounds on which divorce could be petitioned to

Adultery
Desertion without cause (after 3 years or more)
Cruelty
****Incurable insanity (after 5 years) ****

In the same document there is a chart of divorces which shows a large increase in 1950s over previous decades.

Tracey

Tracey Report 19 Oct 2007 18:02

it does say on the divorce that the respondent was incurably of unsound mind and had bbeen continuosly under care and treatment for a period of at least five years immediately precedingthe presentation of the petion

Sorry Tracey, had to have a shower - no hot water for 3 days and the boilers just been mended.

To find that chart Google Divorce reform 1950, then scroll down to this: Seminar 9: Divorce Patterns.

As she was still alive in 1953 and she would have then been 60 it does cut down your search for her death a bit. Where were they married? Will try to find her on the 1901.

Potty Report 19 Oct 2007 18:51

What is father John's occupation on the marr cert? Several Annie Davies with father John on the 1901 and with a name like Davies she could have been Welsh.
