Research for Ireland - Tips needed

I want to do my husbands family tree as a suprise for him. The only info I have is that his father Thomas was born in Ireland, Portaferry,Co Down in 1920 and that he was illegitamate. |

The only way is to apply to GRO, Oxford House, Chichester St. Belfast. |

Oh dear, dont want to put a downer on your surprise but Irish records are just about the worse you could have to trace with very little available. |
