Lost at sea

Can anyone tell me what happens regarding a death registration if a sailor is lost at sea (say from a small private vessel) and no body is found?

I have 2 mariners in the 1800's who vanish from the censuses. (that thread is on the records office board)

Another thought...

I know that 'Presumption of Death' after 7 years can apply but I have no idea whether there was something similar in the 1800s.
