Help with a name please

We have all come across family members in our research that have either changed their names for whatever reason, however this is a slightly different problem.
A girl called Mary Roberts, born 1869 later in life decides to add a middle name of Regina. She even names her daughter (born 1912) Mary Regina.
We haven't been able to find her birth reg because of the name Regina, and according to the internet the name Regina wasn't really used in the public domain until after the reign of Queen Victoria (1901).
My question is - is it possible that she was 're-christened' in her later life, and simply chose the name herself??
Any suggestions please!!
Many thanks

Heather

It may be that someone with that name became very close to her. I have my GGAunt adding the middle name Elizabeth, at her marraige which is conicidentally her ma in laws name. Dont know why she did it - was she very fond of ma in law, or was it a creep?

As its such an unusual name, Id be tempted to enter it in a search on ancestry - for the census nearest to the change - just the name and the area where this Mary lived to see who came up?

Hello Heather,
Just adding this before I have to sign off for today.

I think this is forever going to remain a mystery. We seem to have the puzzle pieces for either side of the family, but her piece is missing.

We know where she lived with her first husband and 3 children, then where she lived with her second husband and next 5 children ( last daughter was born 6 months before she died), and the address where she died, but despite calls to the council they can't find her burial records.

Her 2nd husband registered her death as Mary Regina, and I appreciate that the info given on a death cert is only as good as the informant can give.

Oh well, I'll have to leave this for a couple of days now and get back to it as soon as I can.

Thanks for your advise though Heather.

Best regards,
Karen Watcham.
