Ancestry is the same -- it's the .co.uk portal that has the horrific flash ads; the .com annoyance is minimal, and the .ca hardly rates ads at all. You Brits seem to be exploiting the medium to a much worse extent than the yanks. And Ancestry's really are worse than the ones here, I think. What strikes me as particularly idiotic is that they don't detect my IP address and realize that if I'm in Canada there's very little point in advertising UK home insurance policies to me ...

For IE (which I persist in using for this site because it crashes my Firefox, no matter how much I update it): NO FLASH --

It's wonderful. And absolutely safe to download -- you can find it being discussed by Google's experts, e.g.

For Firefox: ADBLOCK. I couldn't repeat the steps I went through to download and install it recently, but it wasn't too much hassle. (As far as I know, it's an add-on that has to be specifically installed.) When it's installed and enabled, you can right-click on any ad and Adblock it. (At Ancestry, adding */ds/* to the adblock list works to block all the ads, I've found. You can also eliminate common irritants by adding things like */doubleclick/*, the source of many of them.)


I'm just waiting for the first time someone has an epileptic seizure prompted by these horrific things and sues all the bastards involved.

Why I should be subjected to this crap when I'm paying is beyond me.


Get NO FLASH and/or ADBLOCK and then you won't have the problem anywhere, including GR.

That's what is so good about the boards. Sarah I agree with your comment about members having free ad access.

They should have an add free for members who pay for membership maybe some sites do that?

I haven't tried signing out and in yet, but I get the odd adds on here, at the min I've got a specsavers one to my left which isn't as bad as the flashing one I had a min ago.

I have learned so much regarding research etc., in the past, from reading your board, so I'm glad I could help you out for a change.

Actually I can see on the left side of the screen something trying to make an appearance but hopefully it won't fully appear.

I'm obviously missing all the excitement.

I cant see any adverts, flashing or otherwise, other than at the very bottom of the web-page, which Is only ever visible if I scroll right down.

PS yes I also use the .com url.

Yes Faith, I am very annoyed with the adverts - they make me feel as if I am getting a migraine. I would really like to find a way of getting rid of them from the page. Is this possible?

Is anyone else annoyed with the adverts all flashing on GR pages.
Isn't GR getting enough out of our subscriptions. It's so off putting when trying to read a thread. Can we do anything about them as members.
