Hi All,

Im trying to order an overseas death certificate of my Great Grandfather who died in 1940 at sea during the war. Im on the General Registry Office website trying 2 order it and im confused about somthing it askes me 2 fill in and to be honest i have no idea what it is.
I fill in all the details and then it askes me for the GRO reference which at first i pressumed was the volume and page number of the persons death...but it only has one box there and im getting a bit stressed tryign 2 find out what it is because the help section never helps, hehe. Can anyone help me at all in what to do as it is my first time gettin an OVERSEAS cert and i want it alot! :D

If I remember right you have ticked a box on a page before saying something like do you have a reference number you need to untick that box

Hi Sophie,

I've copied and pasted this from the GRO website in the frequently asked questions about ordering overseas certificates. Hope this helps:-

Q10. What happens if I don't know where the overseas birth, marriage or death occurred?

When you get to the place of birth, marriage or death, type 'unknown'; a search will then be made throughout the overseas indexes. Unfortunately if you do not know the place of event, we may not be able to narrow down the search to just one entry.

Hi Sophie,

Most overseas ref numbers only list page, not volume and page. So, you need to put in the page number........plus name year etc
