Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, Shirley. I think by reading your message, it probably confirms what I was wondering.

My mum seemed to think that somebody was already buried in the grave where my dad's parents are buried. Having looked through as many records as I can, it actually looks as if it was my dad's great grandad who bought the plot and it was empty until my grandparents died.

It was common practise in my mums family to purchase a grave When My maternal grandad died in 1939 my nan purchased a grave which was for 3 burials. apparently the smallest grave you could buy at that time. her thought s were she didnt want him buried in a paupers grave and she would be buried with him when the time came. also if any of their children died and the family couldnt afford another grave then they could be buried with Mum & Dad.
Nan passed in 1958 and she is buried with him but non of their children have been buried with them cos as they passed the own families made other aarrangements.

If i hadn't started my research i won't have even known about the spare family plot. My great grandfather was a blacksmith. His job must have brought in some good money.

I did wonder if perhaps the father/grandfather possibly bought the plots when they had a 'bob or two to spare', just in case they or their family fell on hard times in the future.

My great grand father bought 2 graves in the 1900's and there is still a full plot left for family today.

I have found out that my great grandparents' grave was purchased by my great grandmother's father.
This was about 1900.

I wondered if it was common practice for parents/fathers to buy grave plots to save for their family as sort of a gift or security for their family.
