Anyone got any advice on how to go about getting WW1 or WW2 records?
I have done a search on the National Archives website on each of the 2 men I am interested in, but both came up with nothing.
I know both served, at this point I don't know regiments or anything, what do I need to know and then where do I look?


Also, same with wills... what's the best place to look online?

If you can give some details there may be something on Ancestry for WW1

Lost for words.... thanks.. I'll try again!

Claire... try George Edward Rusted in WW1. It may have been Edward George as for his lifetime he believe he was called George but that it was his second name. Only his birth certificate revealed he was called by the "right" first name all along!

He came from Baldock, Herts at the time of the war, born 22/06/1878.

I see from this he transferred from the Suffolk Regiment to the Royal Engineers.

Couldn't see anything on Ancestry or CWGC, could you Claire?

In the absence of anything further on line you'll need to visit the National Archives in person or get somebody to go on your behalf. Now that you have his regimental numbers you may find his personal papers on microfilm. There's no guarantee, though, as many of these were destroyed during WW2 when the records office was bombed and only some of the WW1 soldiers records were saved from the resulting fire

Thankyou SOOOOOOOOOO much ! I'm sure now I can get further, although I am aware that a lot of the records were destroyed in the bombings.
